Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee - a girl who inherited her mother's bright-blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair.

Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfil the dreams they were unable to pursue. But Lydia is under pressures that have nothing to do with growing up in 1970s small town Ohio. Her father is an American born of Chinese immigrants and his ethnicity, and hers, make them conspicuous.

When Lydia's body is found in a lake, James is consumed by guilt and sets out on a reckless path. Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined to make someone accountable. Lydia's brother, Nathan, is convinced that local bad boy Jack is involved. But it's the youngest in the family - Hannah - who may be the only one who knows what really happened.

The sudden and unexpected death of a child opening cracks in a marriage and family. Despite being indeed well written, I found the narrative bumpy, the character depictions contradictory and somewhat shallow. On the strength of other reviews I perhaps expected too much. A good holiday read but not more.

Wie traurig! Die Geschichte über eine halbchinesische Familie in Amerika hat mich deprimiert, mit dieser Minderheit in den USA und den Vorurteilen, mit denen sie kämpfen musste, habe ich mich noch nie beschäftigt. Ich habe zwar trotz Längen weiter gehört, aber es hat mich in eine seltsame Stimmung versetzt. Dabei ist die Sprache und die Entwicklung der Ereignisse mit vielen Rückblenden ganz gut konstruiert.

Langsam wird klar, warum Laura einfach nicht in dieses Leben passte - aber der Schluss ist dann doch überraschend, und für mich lässt er zu viele Fragen offen.

I loved listening to this book, though the story is tragic, and you keep asking yourself how this tragedy might have been prevented. On the other hand I thought it was a good description of what happens when parents have expectations kids cannot or will not meet. A lovely book, very well read by Cassandra Campbell, who is in a class of her own!
