Lydia is the favourite child of Marilyn and James Lee - a girl who inherited her mother's bright-blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair.

Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfil the dreams they were unable to pursue. But Lydia is under pressures that have nothing to do with growing up in 1970s small town Ohio. Her father is an American born of Chinese immigrants and his ethnicity, and hers, make them conspicuous.

This is one of those books that one can truly enjoy as an audiobook. Listened it in 2 days. Amazing.

beautiful book and performance

Ich kenne kein Buch, in dem die Charaktere so lebensnah, realistisch und menschlich geschrieben sind.
Es gibt eigentlich keinen Plot. Aber den braucht es auch gar nicht. Das Buch beschreibt den Umgang der Familie mit dem Tod eines der Kinder.
Es geht um Rassismus, um Erwartungen der Eltern an die Kinder, darum seinen eigenen Weg zu gehen und natürlich um nicht ausgesprochene Dinge.
Ich habe die letzten 20 % vom Buch unter Tränen gelesen. Also Taschentücher bereit halten ;-)
Die Sprecherin Cassandra Campbell ist eine der besten Hörbuchsprecherinnen, die ich je gehört habe (habe das englische Hörbuch gehört).

Wie traurig! Die Geschichte über eine halbchinesische Familie in Amerika hat mich deprimiert, mit dieser Minderheit in den USA und den Vorurteilen, mit denen sie kämpfen musste, habe ich mich noch nie beschäftigt. Ich habe zwar trotz Längen weiter gehört, aber es hat mich in eine seltsame Stimmung versetzt. Dabei ist die Sprache und die Entwicklung der Ereignisse mit vielen Rückblenden ganz gut konstruiert.

Langsam wird klar, warum Laura einfach nicht in dieses Leben passte - aber der Schluss ist dann doch überraschend, und für mich lässt er zu viele Fragen offen.

Deprimierende Geschichte

Ich habe Miniserie "Little Fires Everywhere" geliebt und hatte gehofft, dieses Buch ebenso gut zu finden. Ich fand es furchtbar langatmig, vorhersehbar und die Charaktere flach. Gefühlt kann man die Story auch in drei Sätzen wiedergeben.

The sudden and unexpected death of a child opening cracks in a marriage and family. Despite being indeed well written, I found the narrative bumpy, the character depictions contradictory and somewhat shallow. On the strength of other reviews I perhaps expected too much. A good holiday read but not more.

I loved listening to this book, though the story is tragic, and you keep asking yourself how this tragedy might have been prevented. On the other hand I thought it was a good description of what happens when parents have expectations kids cannot or will not meet. A lovely book, very well read by Cassandra Campbell, who is in a class of her own!

Story develops slowly but sucks you in. you almost start to feel like the figures....every single person is pictured intensiv and understandable....and you see the good will, the desperation , the hope, the fate ,the misled love , the vulnerability, the tragic and the love. very touching,

Cassandra Campbell is the best narrator I've ever heard. Every character's voice instantly recognizable, every phrase filled with raw and real emotion, whether it be quiet or brutal. I am in awe.
