Inhaltsangabe

When a high-ranking officer gallops into the quiet Mistyvales, he brings a warning that shakes the countryfolk to their roots. But for Aedan, a scruffy young adventurer with veins full of fire and a head full of ideas, this officer is not what he seems. The events that follow propel Aedan on a journey that only the foolhardy or desperate would risk, leading him to the gates of the nation's royal academy - a whole world of secrets in itself.

But this is only the beginning of his discoveries. Something is stirring in the land, something more ominous than the rising threat of hostile nations. Fearful travelers whisper of an ancient power breathing over Thirna, changing it, waking it. In the very heart of these stirrings, Aedan encounters that which defies belief, leaving him speechless with terror - and wonder.

Wirklich gelungen

Achtung Kinderbuch!

Was genau hat Sie an Dawn of Wonder enttäuscht?

Awesome start!

Didnt expect much andonly pucked this up because I like the narrator. Was very pleasantly surprised by the scale of the world, the strong plot from beginning to end and the variety of characters. It felt like more than one book, so much stuff happened, so many years passed for the main character and you could really feel his developement. Cant wait for the next book!

Wonderful

Usually, I subtract one star if a story isn’t finished, and this absolutely needs a sequel, but it was such a great story that I deviate from my own rule.

It’s a powerful story about all sorts of things, and although there is a war in the making, something else seems to be happening, too, as the title says.

We don’t know what it is, but it could be something grand, not disastrous.
It’s one of the rare fantasy novels where no magic is involved, and none is needed.
What is needed is training, perseverance, and skills.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Aedan’s education, his struggles, his weaknesses, and his strengths — and at times I could have shaken him — then again, his friends were there to help him do the right things.
Aedan is a strategic mastermind, but has to learn that theory and practice are very different.

I love the idea that the education doesn’t just comprise weapon skills, but all other aspects, too, be they boring or not.
I like the idea of getting to know not only different languages, but cultures and traditions, too. This should be mandatory for every school, imo, maybe then there wouldn’t be so much war and hatred in this world, most of which is based on ignorance.
Aedan has to overcome his hatred and prejudices in order to learn about his enemies, and I hope I won’t have to wait for a whole year or longer to find out how he’ll cope.

Tim Gerard Reynolds does another perfect job at narrating this story. When listening to him, I’m really deep into the story and out of this world.
He was the perfect choice for the book, and I hope he’ll be commissioned to narrate any sequel.

Beautiful!!!

This is truly beautifully written. Even when the plot gets a bit slow, it is always easy to listen because the wording can be truly beautiful. Delightful and very sensitive in some delicate issues it touches!

Rothfuss has nothing on this!

Promising beginning of a series

This is great book to listen too. Tim Gerald Reynolds is an excellent reader and makes it a pleasure. As for the story it isn't perfect. The general theme of a special boy get against the odds into an extraordinary school is common by now. There are also some tropes that make the plot very predictable at times. But the world appears vast and carefully created so it never really bothered me. I can't claim perfect knowledge but the mystery the listeners gets a glimpse at seem unique to me. For a first book a mixture of familiarity and originality can be wise decision. So I still reserve my judgement on this part. What on the other hand truly stands out is the care and depth of the characters, none lack dimensions and all are show some balance. The main character is also well balanced in his challenges small and big. This is one is of particular importance because nothing bores me faster as an untouchable main character that eases through epic threats to the realm. Here it seems relatable and important whether real danger or fantastic explorations of a child.
The second strange is exactly that, in his style the author manages to intertwine childhood wonder and grim reality to one story, where neither is at odds or overplayed. So I can only recommended this book, and hope the author delivers on his promise. And fast. Who is so cruel to hook readers, write such an open ending and than take ages to deliver?

Awesome!

A great entertaining story with everything one might wish for: interesting and twisted plot, vivid characters and the right (small) amount of "magic". Also a wonderful listening experience, thanks to the superb narrator.

Little slow at the beginning but very promising start

While it took me a little to get gripped by the story I am glad I stuck with it. I am positive this will turn out to be an amazing series.

Beautifully written and story telling.

I very much enjoyed the whole book. For a debut book it's rather surprisingly good.
One can tell there has been a lot of care and time invested in the book.
A few moments where the author gets lots a bit to much into details and my ADHD brain starts to get distracted, but some might exactly enjoy that.
Also some of the quests and adventures are a bit repetitive in how they are told, but also that has a certain charme.
TJ Reynolds is one of my favorite narrators and I absolutely love him, he is a true artists and is keeps astonishing me how precise and beautiful his reading and character building is which fits to the writing of the author.
Can't wait for the 2nd book.
