Khat, a member of a humanoid race created by the Ancients to survive in the Waste, and Sagai, his human partner, are relic dealers working on the edge of society, trying to stay one step ahead of the Trade Inspectors and to support Sagai's family. When Khat is hired to find relics believed to be part of one of the Ancients' arcane engines, they are both reluctant to become involved. But the request comes from the Warders, powerful mages who serve Charisat's Elector.

Khat soon discovers that the deadly politics of Charisat's upper tiers aren't the only danger. The relics the Warders want are the key to an Ancient magic of unknown power, and, as all the inhabitants of Charisat know, no one understands the Ancients' magic.

Kritikerstimmen

"This finely crafted novel expertly combines several genres-SF, fantasy, horror-and, perhaps most impressive of all, even manages to avoid an overly sentimental ending." ( Publishers Weekly Starred Review)

Eine gänzlich andere Gesellschaft in dem ein ungleiches Paar wie Indy Jones Geheimnisse sufdeckt und Weltrettung betreibt.

faszinierendes spannendes Abenteuer

the characters and plot feel well thought out and everything plays well into each other. The setting and general worldbuilding is refreshing, although I wouldn't have minded if it would have been explored a little more thoroughly.

All im all a very interesting read, especially recommendable to those who are fed up with trope-y, medival type fantasy stories.

A refreshing setting and well grounded characters.

I love a good adventure and an Indiana Jones like relict hunt in a dessert city is the best kind! Like many others I had a book hang over after the murder bot series and was looking for more Martha Wells. And this was brilliant. But I have a hang over again! I loved the characters and the setting and the rich world! Martha is amazing and I didn’t want this to end!

What an adventure

Ok, in my view this something between scifi and fantasy told from the perspective of a lower tech society, where high technology appears like magic.
I came from the murderbot series and was surprised by this book, because the style ist very different. This is a beautifully written book.

And I thought I didn't like fantasy

The book is set in a post apocalyptic world where much of the knowledge on magic has been lost, resulting in a vibrant trade of relics, left by the more advanced civilisation.

Had a bit of a slow start, but had me raving about the concepts to friends and genuinely care for the characters, their struggles were complex and believable to do with interpersonal relationships, cultural differences and oppression and more. The world is incredibly rich in detail and the story explores the implications and repercussions of the magical system. Very much enjoyed how real everything felt. I also really liked the ending, the story of the characters was fully finished but i do still wonder about some of the world.

Great story in richly detailed world
