A return to the world of Samantha Shannon's Sunday Times and New York Times-bestselling The Priory of the Orange Tree

Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms – but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose.
To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hróth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin. Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be.
The dragons of the East have slept for centuries. Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber. Now someone from her mother's past is coming to upend her fate.
When the Dreadmount erupts, bringing with it an age of terror and violence, these women must find the strength to protect humankind from a devastating threat.
Intricate and epic, A Day of Fallen Night sweeps listeners back to the world of A Priory of the Orange Tree, showing us a course of events that shaped it for generations to come.

©2023 Samantha Shannon (P)2023 Bloomsbury Publishing PlcI started to understand what was happening on page 159. I tried to pay attention from the beginning, but I was still confused about who was who, what the princes were doing, and who the armless person was, etc.
I was listening to the audiobook at 1.4x speed, so that wasn't like me at all. I had to reread some chapters to finally understand what was going on. From that point on, I finally understood what was happening in the story.
I am here for the vibes and the story; please don't ask me what country hates whom or where people are located. I still haven't figured that out yet.
----
I am almost don't with it ( 60% ) ... and I don't want it to end. I cannot wait to read the Priory but I am scared that I would not like the characters the way I do with ADOFN.
I love Glorian and Tunuva so much , even Dumai , and I wanted more of them . But Glorian and Tunuva have my heart.
Glorian because she is just a girl who wants to make her parents proud , and she always feels insecure and she wants to do good from the bodom of her heart and she really ties her best.
And Tunuva ... words cannot describe how much I love her. We are both mothers. I pisically cannot imagine her pain of loosing her child, and that void that she has in her. It is my worst nightmare to lose my child.
----
I finished this book now, or it has finished me; I don't know yet, but I loved every second.
I just cannot hate any character. I just love this story. Every character is flawed and so well-written; I really felt like I was reading a history book about real events and real people.
I love everything

First of all - it's a prequel to Priory, not a sequel. I don't really understand why there are bad reviews criticizing the lack of the characters from Priory when they wouldn't be born for hundreds of years.
I am not completely finished with the book just yet, but it quickly picked up the pace with the plot, and it's very intense. I struggle with putting down the book before going to sleep, because it's just as interesting as watching (the earlier seasons of) Game of Thrones.
Priory has been rightfully praised for its diversity in characters and cultures - ADoFN improves upon this immensely, taking you to even more places, like Hroth, and implementing even more interesting and lovable characters.
What I love especially is the inclusion of characters on the asexual spectrum, as well as non-binary characters. I wish there had been books like this when I was younger; seeing yourself represented in those aspects in media is really important, and I am so, so happy that Samantha Shannon did such a good job with it!
In terms of narration, I really like the audiobook so far. Every POV has its own narrator, and they've all done an exceptionally good job with it.
Overall, I think the Roots of Chaos series is among the very best high fantasy books ever written, and very much worth buying the books and/or audiobooks!
Even better than Priory of the Orange Tree

Regarding the story:
I really enjoyed the book, though i struggled to continue listening a few times throughout the story.
I did like all of the different viewpoints, and never felt disappointed when the narration shifted focus, which i find very important and rare for such books. Characters are truly a standout quality of this series, and this book even improved upon Priory in that regard.
There were a few aspects that felt rushed towards the end, but overall that didn't bother me significantly.
I did love how the story worked independently of Priory, but also made the prior knowledge feel rewarding.
Regarding the readers:
This was a bit of a mixed bag for me.
Apart from pronunciation of certain words differing quite a lot from PrioryOTOT, i often had to listen on significantly higher speeds, mainly in the first half for the reader of Dumai's part.
Wulf's reader also had a really strong accent and was hard to understand at times, but i applaud that decision as it really paid off for immersion.
Regarding worldbuilding, while i loved the overall lore there are still a lot of issues with the unrealistic lack of communication between the continents and regions, but that was the same in Priory. And it probably only bothers me.
Overall i still have to give 5 stars because i am tremendous impressed by the consistent quality and especially how Shannon manages to deliver one of the strongest casts of narrators I've seen in fantasy so far.
Great characters and story, with a few (minor) flaws
