A moving, riveting story written in beautiful language. I couldn't put it down and when the story ended, I immediately downloaded another book by Elif Shafak.

The author has some of the best storytelling I’ve ever read. The story is so touching, yet raw and heartbreaking. I would recommend this book to every single person, no matter your preferences in the genre or mood.
The only thing I want to criticize is the narrator. It really didn’t sit right with me that she was narrating the characters with an accent. I understand that they are not initially English or from an English speaking county, but to automatically assume someone has an accent is just kinda offensive. Especially considering that they aren’t even talking in English, they are talking in Turkish. It’s just translated for us.
AND she mispronounced Humeyra’s name🥴 saying HumeRIA the whole time. That irritated the sh*t out of me. You are recording an audiobook, couldn’t you inform yourself on the pronunciation beforehand?

Es lässt sich schwer nachempfinden, wie sich ein weibliches Wesen fühlen muss, das in eine derart misogyne, machoistische Gesellschaft geboren wird. Schon auf dem europäischen Kontinent haben es Frauen nicht immer leicht, gerade durch die wirtschaftliche Unterdrückung und die Negierung des Weiblichen, ein selbstbestimmtes und zufriedenes Leben zu führen, doch wenn man Shafaks unter die Haut gehenden Schilderungen weiblicher Schicksale lauscht, wo Frauen kaum besser - vielleicht sogar schlechter - behandelt werden wie Haustiere, bleibt nur noch tiefe Erschütterung und volles Mitgefühl für die so schrecklich drangsalierten Frauen in Kleinasien.
