Das Rad der Zeit gehört seit der Kindheit zu meinen Lieblingsbüchern. Nun habe ich es mal als englisches Hörbuch probiert. Die Geschichte ist super geschrieben, der männliche Sprecher macht seine Sache auch ziemlich gut, wenn auch vielleicht einen Tick zu monoton (meckern auf hohem niveau). Im Gegensatz dazu macht seine weibliche Kollegin einen schrecklichen Job: ihre Stimme, Tonlage und Monotonität bringen mich ständig dazu gedanklich abzudriften. Sie liest einen viel kleineren Teil als er, aber ich empfinde sie dennoch als sehr nervig.

Die Tonqualität ist super die Sprecher auch!
Die Story ist manchmal etwas komplex mit ihren vielen Namen... aber trotzdem absolut toll ...
Werde gleich mit dem nächsten Teil weiter machen !

This review isn't meant to be all encompassing. Just want to give my quick and dirty two cents.

This book is good, but beyond that it's iconic. Give it a listen if you are into, or trying to find your way into the genre of Epic Fantasy.

That all being said, I don't think it's a perfect book. Pacing can be weird, especially towards the end where you're suddenly hit with tons of pretty far-out fantasy stuff, but with littke tine ti get acquainted with them. Then again, this is the first book in a massive series, and I've only listened to this only so far, so maybe it's all being saved for later, which I do think it is.

The characters are great, though. Especially towards the end I feel they all find their place in the world, and become more believable/develope a more nuanced personality.

beide Sprecher füllen die Geschichte und die Figuren mit Leben. Robert Jordan spinnt die Handlung sehr geschickt und auch sehr spannend ohne zu viel zu früh preiss zu geben.

War an der Geschichte interessiert und wollte mein Englisch damit weiter verbessern. Aber die Geschichte ist recht langwierig und kleinteilig geschrieben. Das hat mir das zuhören auf Englisch zusätzlich erschwert. Aber über vieles kann eigentlich auch drüber gehört werden. ( Was vll. nicht für die Geschichte spricht.)

one of the classic stories of the fantasy genre.
both narrator's do a good job reading and performing individually. yet each pronounce some of the names/words differently from one another. this does not impair the understanding, just feels a little odd. other than that I enjoyed the journey.

After having given up on the Sword of Truth series after book 6 due to varies reasons (see review on Book 5), I decided to try the Wheel of Time. And I must say I've not been disappointed. Currently on book 8, I decided to review Book 1 since I figure most people will start here.

One thing that is extremely well done is the characters and their development. They continue to change and grow while staying true to the basic character traits that are established early on. The characters aren't suddenly changed from one book to the next, leaving the reader wondering what happened nor do they stagnate. The story and its details seem well thought out and planned, not made up by the writer on a whim.

Another thing that usually really bothers me is repetition of the story. I always assume people start from book one... and getting the back story told over and over and over again, frustrates me. That is not to say that there is no repetition in this series, but it is handled in a very clever way, by retelling the same situation (usually whatever happened at or near the end of the previous book) from a different angle, adding more information not just retelling what the reader already knows. It doesn't feel forced and there's no urge to skip the first hour of the story to get to the actual plot.

And on a side note... the readers of this book are excellent. Especially since some of the characters have very similar names, the voice acting of the readers really helps to keep them apart.

I would definitely recommend this series, even though it's long, as of Book 8, it still has enough new plot, character development and interesting new characters to make me want to keep 'reading'

Ohne Frage, Anlehnungen an den "Herrn der Ringe" sind in diesem Fantasy-Epos zwar schon fast an der Tagesordnung, aber es gibt so viel mehr in diesem Buch, was es einzigartig macht.
Die Geschichte des jungen Rand al'Thor und seiner Gefährten gestaltet sich (nach etwas zähem Beginn) spannend und hörenswert. Sei es die erste Begegnung mit den Trollocs, die Flucht aus dem Heimatdorf, das Erkunden von Shadar Logoth oder auch die Reise durch die Fäule, es macht einfach Spaß, zu zu hören. Außerdem hat man den Eindruck, dass viele Andeutungen gemacht werden, die wichtig für die Fortsetzungen sind. So etwas finde ich immer spannend.

Ich habe dieses Hörbuch durchweg genossen. Meiner Meinung nach gibt sich der Sprecher (Herr Kramer) sehr viel Mühe und schafft es, die Charaktere überzeugend zum Leben zu erwecken. Auch Frau Reading liest sehr gut, allerdings sind ihre Kapitel nicht sehr zahlreich (das liegt daran, dass sie nur die Kapitel liest, wo es hauptsächlich um die Frauen im Buch geht).

Definitiv eine Empfehlung!
