Über diesen Titel

By the author of The Science Delusion, a detailed account of how science can authenticate spirituality.

In this pioneering audiobook, Rupert Sheldrake shows how science helps validate seven practices on which all religions are built and which are part of our common human heritage:

  • Meditation
  • Gratitude
  • Connecting with nature
  • Relating to plants
  • Rituals
  • Singing and chanting
  • Pilgrimage
  • Holy places

The effects of spiritual practices are now being investigated scientifically as never before, and many studies have shown that religious and spiritual practices generally make people happier and healthier. Rupert Sheldrake summarises the latest scientific research on what happens when we take part in these practices and suggests ways that listeners can explore these fields for themselves.

For those who are religious, Science and Spiritual Practices will illuminate the evolutionary origins of their own traditions and give a new appreciation of their power. For the nonreligious, this book will show how the core practices of spirituality are accessible to all, even if they do not subscribe to a religious belief system.

This is a book for anyone who suspects that in the drive towards radical secularism, something valuable has been left behind. Rupert Sheldrake believes that by opening ourselves to the spiritual dimension, we may find the strength to live more wholesome and fulfilling lives.

This book gives some interesting ideas about parts of religions that we could keep in future when creating a new world religion. Anyway in my opinion author is still too hard rooted in tradition and has problem to move forward.

Some interesting ideas

I like Dr. Sheldrake's books, admire his work and especially treasure this one.
Taking a profound stance against dogmatic materialist views, Sheldrake explores seven widely practiced and scientifically examined spiritual practices which are meditation, gratefulness, prayer, connecting with nature, rituals, singing, and pilgrimage. Filled with historical and ethnic narration, personal anecdotes and scientific research, it is both insightful and much joy to read. It is full of ideas on how to implement spiritual practices in your life, no matter what cultural, religious or non-religious background you have. While discussing practices of various religions, Sheldrake encourages us to take a non-dogmatic standpoint and regard the different mystical traditions as expressions of a common spiritual ground, which I liked a lot. The book fits perfect for those new to the topic but has enough depth and content to offer new insights also to those already familiar with the subject.

I also like the fact that the auther reads his audibooks himself. Having seen him two decades ago on a lecture tour, his audiobooks always remind me about how he has influenced my way of thinking about science and the narrow view of materialism.

The only thing I missed was a printed version of the many reading suggestions Sheldrake mentions in the final chapter. Since this is not the author's fault, I'll give this audiobook a top rating.
