Inhaltsangabe

As the traitors tighten their grip on Terra, Rogal Dorn must marshal the Imperial hosts to weather the storm. But not all of the defenders will survive the onslaught....

Listen to it because:

Dan Abnett returns to the Horus Heresy! Experience one of the crucial stages of the Siege, as Rogal Dorn and Horus match wits in a game of Regicide where the board is the Throneworld itself, and one wrong move could lead to utter devastation....

The story:

The Traitor Host of Horus Lupercal tightens its iron grip on the Palace of Terra, and one by one the walls and bastions begin to crumple and collapse. Rogal Dorn, Praetorian of Terra, redoubles his efforts to keep the relentless enemy at bay, but his forces are vastly outnumbered and hopelessly outgunned. Dorn simply cannot defend everything. Any chance of survival now requires sacrifice, but what battles dare he lose so that others can be won? Is there one tactical stroke, one crucial combat, that could turn the tide forever and win the war outright?

Generally ok

First of all, Dan Abnett knows his trade, the characters are interesting and the story keeps you invested. The pacing is a bit slow at first but it really picks up speed during the first part. Some personal remarks of criticism: There is unusually much (needless) swearing in the novel and though I guess you can call it a pop culture reference at this point, did the remembrancer really have to literally say "gender is fluid" when talking religion with a foul-mouthed soldier? The explanation of the rise of the Imperial cult out of the heresy war is ok, and the novel goes into quite some detail at one time exploring religious symbolism and referencing a lot of religions that haven't been around for a very long time. I guess it's a political choice to avoid conflict, but given the general development of the world in the past few millennia, I think it would make more sense referencing Jesus Christ, Buddha or Allah as commonly known religious focal points instead of... Mithras. And last but definitely not least: did there really need to be a Deus ex machina new perpetual? The ones we already have are quite useless thus far, and the back story of this new one is just weird and feels totally out of place, to me at least. Otherwise, as always, a good read. Enjoy!

Starts slow but gets better by the hour.

Despite the slow start, it's a great listen. And what seems a bit bland at first turns into an intriguing story. Couldn't stop listening and finished it in 2 days.
