A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

With the Imperial forces locked in a gruelling war of attrition over the dead hive city of Vesperus, a former ace fighter pilot returns to the cockpit as the Aeronautica risks it all to secure Interceptor City for the Imperium.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Twenty years after the release of the highly acclaimed Double Eagle, Dan Abnett returns to the Aeronautica Imperialis for the long-awaited follow-up. Follow along as an ace dogfighter is forced out of her comfortable “retirement” and back into deadly aerial combat.

THE STORY

Former ace fighter pilot Bree Jagdea’s days of high-octane, white-knuckle dogfights are long behind her. Content with executing supply runs for the war effort, Jagdea considers herself retired. But when enemy forces start a relentless bombing campaign through the hive city of Vesperus, Jagdea is forced back into the Aeronautica – stationed with the infamous Circus 66 squadron, executing near-suicidal dead-drops and blistering interception runs through Vesperus’ lethal rat runs.

Plunged back into a world where the smallest of errors means instant death, can Jagdea outfly the enemy aces, secure Interceptor City for the Imperium, and return to solid ground with her sanity intact?

Interceptor City does something I miss in many 40k books: it shows you the terror, the fear, the doubt—the "shred." The psychological impact war and fighting have on the human mind. Having not yet listened to Double Eagle, I didn’t feel like I had to in order to enjoy this book. The combat is described with such finesse, it's like watching an action sequence. The protagonist feels human, grounded, and I found it easy to root for her.

The novel shines a light on another type of warfare—not fought in trenches (well, actually, kind of), but in the sky. A gripping tale, narrated perfectly (as always) by Toby Longworth.

The Aeronautica remembers.

Dan Abnett is the most prolific 40K author. Despite Gaunt's Ghosts probably being his best known and most successful series, "Double Eagle" and "Interceptor City" are perhaps my favourite books by him. "Interceptor City" technically is a sequel to "Double Eagle", although both books are perfectly self-contained. I don't know if this intersects another of his interests or if he just did a lot of research into real world wartime aviation and fighter combat, these two books are just masterpieces. The technical aspects are all well grounded in physics and history, which makes the transition into the 40K universe so immersive and visceral. That aside, there are, of course, his usual well-written, like- or hateable characters, connecting you to the story emotionally, making you care about what happens to them and thrilled to eventually find out. If you like fighter planes, wartime stories, and 40K, those are the books for you. I massively enjoyed them and hope he'll write more Aeronautica books. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Visceral and dense

ein echter Abnett. Sehr atmosphärische und spannende Rückkehr von Bree Jagdea. Mischung aus Flieger- und Kriminalgeschichte mit überzeugender psychologischer Entwicklung der Protagonistin.

Gute Geschichte

A good start, some smooth flying, awesome acrobatics near to end but a kinda rough landing.
