In flow, everyday experience becomes a moment by moment opportunity for joy and self-fulfillment. Flow is the brain-child of a fascinating psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a renowned social scientist who has devoted his life's work to the study of what makes people truly happy, satisfied and fulfilled. While much of the study of psychology investigates disorders of the human mind, Dr. Csikszentmihalyi takes a different route. He focuses on the noble side of human nature, our capacity for living a life of integrity, courage, and perseverance. With his landmark research on flow, he reveals what he considers beautiful in life, ways of being and behaving that make people happy, satisfied and delighted to be alive. His insights into the "flow experience" show ways to lessen stress, fear and anxiety while increasing feelings of challenge, joy and excitement. The revolutionary findings of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Experience Sampling Method offer unprecedented information about the specific ways we can turn life into a continuous high quality experience. You'll discover how anyone can enrich his or her quality of life simply by learning how flow occurs and what it feels like. You'll learn about the key elements of the flow experience including:
- why it is important to know what you want to do in any given moment
- specific activities you can do that produce flow easily and naturally
- how to improve your experience of work so you feel in control and rewarded by it
- keys to harnessing the power of concentration
- the difference between pleasure and enjoyment (only one leads to personal growth)
- how to match challenges with skills to avoid boredom and frustration and maximize enjoyment
Once you experience the exhilaration of the "flow" state of being, you'll want to return again and again.

Creativity is about capturing those moments that make life worth living. Legendary psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi reveals what leads to these moments - be it the excitement of the artist at the easel or the scientist in the lab - so that this knowledge can be used to enrich people's lives. Drawing on nearly 100 interviews with exceptional people, from biologists and physicists, to politicians and business leaders, to poets and artists, as well as his 30 years of research, Csikszentmihalyi uses his famous flow theory to explore the creative process.

What do you do when you're faced with a big decision? If you're like most people, you probably make a pro and con list, spend a lot of time obsessing about decisions that didn't work out, get caught in analysis paralysis, endlessly seek other people's opinions to find just that little bit of extra information that might make you sure, and finally go with your gut.

You'll never see leadership the same way again after reading this book. These 15 commitments are a distillation of decades of work with CEOs and other leaders. They are radical or provocative for many. They have been game changers for us and for our clients. We trust they will be for you too. Our experience is that unconscious leadership is not sustainable. It won't work for you, your team, or your organization in the long term.

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset. Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success - but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment but may actually jeopardise success.

Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction. Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters, and scientists. He discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

Generally underrated!
If you are into peak performance or have a background in competitive sports you will already be familiar with the concept of flow. In basketball for instance "being in the zone" - a synonym for flow - is something often talked about by fans and players alike. When you are in a flow state you are performing at your best and you are doing so effortlessly. At least so it seems. If you are interested in learning about this mind state from a fairly scientific, but also practical perspective, this book is for you. I consider FLOW a classic on the topic, which stands unrivaled to this day, although it was published more than two decades ago.
The book is narrated by the author, a now retired professor of psychology. I consider narration by the author virtually always a plus, because in my perception it makes the spoken word more credible and authentic. This is also true for this book.
Like the other books I have reviewed, this book has earned my appreciation by making every word count. It is to the point. A quick read and definitely worth a re-read. The audiobook comes with a pdf, which contains a summary of each of the book's chapters. I found this summary to be quite handy if you want a quick refresher on the main concepts of the book.

Horrible. I stopped after ~40 minutes
What a waste! Here is a topic -flow - whose understanding could increase the quality of your life quite a bit, but then you get:
1) a weird story line read by the author himself that is mostly a confuse collection of anecdotes and all sounds more like an interview than an audio book
2) weird musical interludes after every paragraph with music pieces from the renaissance (cembalo), and
3) weird/useless practical advice: wanna have flow? Have sex! - but not too much. Or: do sports or go for a walk, but don’t get bored. That‘s the level of the book...
So unfortunately a waste of time and money.

Audio book is ok, but I expected more of it tho. I think a lot of it is not really a secret but just common sense. The book feels a bit outdated, it probably had more relevance 20-30 years ago when it came out.

A must read.
The content of the book is extremely insightful however I truly disliked that the author read it (I bought is as an Audible) because his reading skills made me almost fall asleep every time. it was tough to keep the concentration and I would say that initial part of the book is very useful, the rest was not as useful as the initial part.
I would suggest to buy the book instead of the audible in this case.

What a lucky man he was
The concept of flow of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has turned into mainstream. The book show that in many aspects of live the introduction of flow can turn you into a lucky man (or women for that part).
It is only a pity that the flow while reading is often interupted by the intermezzos and music. But luckily, thanks to flow, I became conscious that by listening while on the running belt, I could reduce by concentration span and turn the slow motion of the book once again into a real flow!
