Inhaltsangabe

This program is narrated by acclaimed reader Bahni Turpin, whose past work includes The Hate U Give and The Underground Railroad

In Children of Blood and Bone, Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut.

They killed my mother.

They took our magic.

They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie's Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers - and her growing feelings for an enemy.

The Language

I have read in at least two reviews that listeners are complaining about the use of English in this audiobook, calling it "heavily accented". Even before buying and listening to it I could tell that this story is probably set in Nigeria (the name of the author, the mention of Yoruba in the description). It is not a dialect, but Nigerian English that the narrator uses in this audiobook. I wish Audible would comment on reviews like the one mentioned to clarify and prevent discriminating language in reviews.

Loved it

A beautiful story which meets the Zeitgeist. The voice of the narrator adds authencity and vibrance to the storyline. Eventhough i was hoping for another finish i hope that there will be a second book released soon...

That narrator is unbearable

I want to make clear that I am talking about the audiobook only.
I bought it after reading many good reviews. Normally I don’t mind a bad narrator as long as the story is good, that was why I never took the time to listen to the preview. I however had not expected to be confronted with a narrator speaking a heavily accented English and found out quickly that my tolerance for a bad narrator does not reach that far. Besides the fact that it is simply annoying I can’t afford listening to such an audiobook because, being no native speaker myself, I learn from the narrators of my books.
It’s a pity that the narrator is so awful, I really heard good things about this book.
