Über diesen Titel

Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings.

In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours.

The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself. America's first great publicist, he was consciously trying to create a new American archetype. In the process, he carefully crafted his own persona, portrayed it in public, and polished it for posterity. His guiding principle was a "dislike of everything that tended to debase the spirit of the common people". Few of his fellow founders felt this comfort with democracy so fully, and none so intuitively.

In this colorful and intimate narrative, Isaacson provides the full sweep of Franklin's amazing life, from his days as a runaway printer to his triumphs as a statesman, scientist, and Founding Father. He chronicles Franklin's tumultuous relationship with his illegitimate son and grandson, his practical marriage, and his flirtations with the ladies of Paris. He also shows how Franklin helped to create the American character and why he has a particular resonance in the 21st century.

Kritikerstimmen

"The most readable full-length Franklin biography available." ( The Washington Post Book World)
"Energetic, entertaining, and worldly." ( The New Yorker)
"In its common sense, clarity and accessibility, it is a fitting reflection of Franklin's sly pragmatism.... This may be the book that most powerfully drives a new pendulum swing of the Franklin reputation." ( The New York Times Book Review)

In these crazy and seemingly trying times politically - this is a great book to listen to now. It reminds us that chaos has been and will remain a part of the United States. Benjamin Frankiin's life story is incredibly pertinent to today as it was when he lived. I found the story and narrator to be both excellent.

Really loved listening to this book!

The text is of great value even more as a historical account on the formation of the USA as a nation than as a biography. Not to say it was not interesting also to get the know the man that was BF. The narrator of the text is very good but the audio technician made a lapse of putting the mic to close to the reader's mouth and there are too many noises that are simply not pleasant. I had to add a roaring fire sound while listening to drown those sounds.

A decent read all in all

This well-narrated biography of Benjamin Franklin is a source of guidance and inspiration for all valuing the values of liberalism.

Great portrait of the roots of the American spirit

It’s was interesting journey trough life of one of the greatest man in history of USA. It’s fascinating that one person could have achieved that much in so many areas. We should all learn from him

Great man, Great Book!

I don't agree with the first reviewer at all regarding the narrator who did a superb job! I know what the above reviewer refers to as "breathing pauses" but this actually makes his narration even better and more "human".

The story did not really captivate me but this is probably due to my personal preference of subject matter. I enjoyed the author's biographies of Einstein and Steve Jobs so there is nothing wrong with Walter Isaacson's writing style.

Great Narrator, Story Not To my Taste
