Walter Isaacson, one of the most celebrated biographers of our time, is probably the only person who could successfully tackle a biography of the utterly complex, enigmatic, and misunderstood Leonardo Da Vinci; in fact, you could say that Da Vinci is the Steve Jobs of the 15th century (smile if you get it). Half jokes aside, Isaacson does an incredible job of melding Da Vinci the man with Da Vinci the artist, scientist, and inventor. Though it sometimes seems as if Dan Brown deserves credit for the recent cultural fascination with the Renaissance artist, Isaacson will surely be credited for unearthing Da Vinci’s past in a scholarly yet manageable manner. Narrator Alfred Molina's rhythmic and smooth delivery makes this work all the more accessible. —Laura, Audible Editor
Inhaltsangabe
The author of the acclaimed best sellers Benjamin Franklin, Einstein, and Steve Jobs delivers an engrossing biography of Leonardo da Vinci, the world's most creative genius.
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history's most creative genius.
Now Walter Isaacson brings Leonardo da Vinci to life, showing why we have much to learn from him. His combination of science, art, technology, and imagination remains an enduring recipe for creativity. So, too, was his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His relentless curiosity should remind us of the importance of instilling, in both ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it - to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.

Geschichte
Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us - an ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from leather-aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings. In best-selling author Walter Isaacson's vivid and witty full-scale biography, we discover why Franklin turns to us from history's stage with eyes that twinkle from behind his new-fangled spectacles. In Benjamin Franklin, Isaacson shows how Franklin defines both his own time and ours. The most interesting thing that Franklin invented, and continually reinvented, was himself.

Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk, a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn't get a teaching job or a doctorate, became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn.

In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

Too detailed
Unless you are interested in what multiple critics said about Leonardos pictures and how he drew his pictures (reported very extensively) and what the author thinks about it all, this book is not for you. Leonardo's art side is described with more detail than his science side, which I personally found a pity. Also the historical context could have been explained better by cutting on the long passages about the respective paintings.

Good biography.
I´ve read a couple of da Vinci biographies, some where worse than this one, but some, better, too. The Author focuses on works of art, paintings, and it´s sometimes a bit hard to follow him, since you cannot see those Pictures if you´re not looking at your mobile simultaniously. I looked the paintings up, and got new insight in the works. Sadly, this biography, like every else I´ve ever read, idealises Leonardo always a bit. All in all, I can recommend this very much, although the Speaker sounds sometimes like a scoundre.
