eigentlich super spannend aber soziokulturell unaushaltbar engstirnig. Klischees ohne Ende. In verbindung mit dem Sprecher und seiner wenig emphatischen Stimme echt keinen Bock mehr.

I know the main characters now, but I did not feel any emotional attachement to them at all. The plot is really slow, but even when there's action it did not draw me in much more than the endless descriptions of Mars' geological formations.
Would probably have stopped reading if this wasn't an audiobook.

Nerdy side note: The automation is just ridiculous. They are manually flying planes that were manufactured by a completely automated factory. They very quickly start to produce crazy luxury items like wine on Mars and seem to have just endless raw materials to build their machines with. Procuring and refining minerals seems to be no problem at all, but apparently there much manual programming effort needed (on Mars, because you can't prepare stuff like that on Earth, obviously) to get brick laying robots to build houses.

This book was recommended from many different sources. I really can't understand why.

Die Mars-Trilogie von KSR hatte ich als fleißiger Mitleser bei r/printsf natürlich schon lange auf dem Schirm und die Landung des NASA-Rovers Perseverance hat nun den perfekten Anlass geboten, in die berühmte Reihe einzusteigen.

Wow, ich bin absolut begeistert. Alles wirkt unheimlich fundiert und recherchiert. Der Autor muss sich intensivst in die Geologie des Mars eingearbeitet haben, denn die Beschaffenheit und das darauf basierendiere Terraforming werden ausführlich und mit Fachterminologie im Stile einer "Hard Sci-Fi" beschrieben. Viele kritisieren dies, ich fand es genial. Aber auch davon abgesehen bietet dieses Buch tiefgründige philosophische Debatten und wilde politische Revolution. Der eigentliche Star des Buchs bleibt aber der Mars.

Richard Ferrone ist im Übrigen ein fantastischer Erzähler und ich freue mich schon auf die Nachfolger 'Green' und 'Blue Mars'.

This really scratched that itch I had for some nice retro hard sci-fi. As a molecular biologist it’s especially fun to see how optimistically the author projected 90s biotech into the future. I really appreciate the extensive research. Only critic I have is the dominance of Malthusian theory which I believe is fundamentally flawed and has been regurgitated in pop science so much that everyone just believes it’s true. Otherwise this book feels like it’s playing between stand on Sansibar and the expands so for fans of either I can recommend.

Für Leser, die an der Marsbesiedlung und wissenschaftlich fundierten Hintergründen dazu interessiert sind, bietet das Buch massig Fakten und plausible Fiktion. Leider hat es dabei wenig und mäßige Story. gerade am Anfang scheint es, als existierten die Charaktere nur, um zur ausschweifenden Beschreibung der Geologie und Geografie des Planeten verschiedene Fakten aus anderen Forschungsgebieten beizutragen. Schade, ich hatte mehr erwartet.
