Alone is one of those books that makes you stop and think, “How on earth did the author come up with this?” — and then you realize that the strangest part is how completely believable it all feels.
The premise alone is brilliant: four years of total isolation in exchange for half a million dollars. No people, no voices, no physical contact with the outside world. Just Celeste, her routines, her thoughts… and whatever her mind decides to give her.
And this is where E.J. Noyes really shines.

The atmosphere of this book is incredible. Quiet, isolated, unsettling and strangely intimate. There is something almost hypnotic about being trapped inside Celeste’s head and experiencing the world through her eyes. The loneliness isn’t just a setting — it becomes a character in its own right. You can feel how the endless silence, repetition and lack of human contact slowly change the way Celeste experiences reality.

What makes Alone particularly special is that it isn't simply a romance set against an unusual backdrop. The romance is woven into something much bigger: a story about loneliness, trust, trauma, perception, emotional survival and the desperate human need for connection.

And then there is Olivia.
Her arrival completely changes the dynamic. Suddenly Celeste has something she has been deprived of for years: another human being. Someone to talk to, touch, care about… and possibly love. But after so much isolation, there is a fascinating question hanging over everything: can Celeste trust what she feels when she can no longer be completely sure what is real?
I absolutely loved the way Noyes plays with that uncertainty.

The first-person narration is especially effective here. We don't simply observe Celeste's experience — we are stuck inside her head with her. We hear her thoughts, her fears, her memories and the voices she has created to survive the isolation. It makes the story incredibly personal and, at times, genuinely unsettling.

And yet, despite the darker psychological elements, there is so much warmth in this book. The relationship between Celeste and Olivia feels tender, intense and deeply human. Their connection becomes almost a counterweight to all that isolation.
This is also what makes Alone stand out from a typical romance. It doesn't feel like a romance with a psychological subplot. It feels like a psychological story that happens to contain a beautiful, complicated love story.

Original premise. Exceptional atmosphere. Complex characters. A fascinating look at what prolonged isolation can do to a human mind — and a very moving reminder of just how much we need other people.
And that ending… let's just say E.J. Noyes definitely knows how to make you question what you've just experienced.
Beautiful, unsettling, original and impossible to forget.

Definitely one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it.
