Beth Hollis never imagined a future without her twin sister, Andy. But after a tragic accident takes Andy from her, Beth is left shattered, struggling to figure out how to live with a grief that feels impossible to survive.

Then Fia—the woman who was first at the scene of the accident—steps back into Beth’s life.

Steady, compassionate, and undemanding, Fia becomes a lifeline just when Beth needs one most. But as their connection deepens, Beth can’t ignore the painful truth that Fia is tied to the worst moment of her life.

How can Beth open herself up to the woman who makes her feel whole again, when that means facing the loss that broke her apart?

I’ve really enjoyed all of this author’s previous books and have listened to many of them more than once. She usually creates very authentic characters and stories that stay with me for a long time.

Unfortunately, this one didn’t work as well for me. The overall tone felt very heavy and depressing, and I struggled a bit with the many flashbacks and detailed conversations involving the sister who had already died at the beginning of the book. I understand that this was meant to show the surviving twin’s grief, but for me it was simply too much focus on a character whose story could no longer really develop because the outcome was already known.

At the same time, I would have liked much more development from the other side of the love story. Even though there were several aspects of the main character that I thought I would relate to, I never fully connected with her emotionally, and the relationship itself felt unbalanced to me because the second character remained comparatively underexplored. I also missed more lighter moments between the characters.

Still, the writing itself is very strong, and Abby Craden’s narration was excellent as always.

Beautifully Written, but Too Heavy for Me
