Touching story, some very insidious funny quotes and observations. The narrator does a great job. The narration itself loses momentum in the middle, and it was somewhat of a slog to get through even though I liked it a lot, but it picks up again in the end and I recommend finishing the book.

Wie vermutlich die meisten hier hatte ich das Musical gesehen, war begeistert und wollte mehr wissen. Die Story ist sehr ernst, politisch, gesellschaftskritisch... Auf jeden Fall etwas für Erwachsene. Vermutlich wäre ich begeistert von dem Buch, wenn der Sprecher nicht so furchtbar monoton vorlesen würde. Man kann die Charaktere kaum unterscheiden und spannende, ja schockierende Stellen werden mit derselben Gleichgültigkeit vorgetragen wie Personenbeschreibungen oder nachdenkliche Stellen. Ich habe mich sehr gequält mit dem Durchhören, habe entsprechend lang dafür gebraucht und kann es leider nur bedingt weiterempfehlen.

Do you like books that describe the most benign details to death, yet somehow gloss over very important story lines? Or how about books that introduce characters only to never mention them ever again? Then you’ll love it.

The narrator some how made it worse

I have been warned about the story being dark. I have seen the countless triggr warnungs. I have been warned the writer was a little sub par.

Still, i was appalled at times.

I get that, despite writing the book in the 90s, the author wanted to emulate an old timey vibe. But he butters the prose on thick. As a doctorate in English (Children's) literature I would have expected him to know better than think fan cy words would make his prose good.

The people ate nasty altogether. There is no lovable character here for no matter how much I look. The men are awful. The women are awful and what you would expect of women being writtenv buy a gay dude in the 90s

The story is decent in parts, but reads like pulling chewing gum out of your gair. If not for the audio book it would have been a DNF.

Do know what you are getting into, because infidelity and a crude eacism alllegory are the least of your worries. This book us not for everyone and will disappoint and schock you if you cane here because of the musical. (Which I have not seen.)

The narrator is nice. He brings the vibe of the book alive and manages to make it a little more humerous, than the text alone reads. I also usually enjoy calm male voices. So it might come down to preferences, as others have given the narrrator 1 star.
