It was overdue to write an economic history of the Third Reich. Adam Tooze delivered a masterpiece!

Unfortunately the really indispensable statistics make it hard to follow the listening text. The speakers (including the author) should put more emphasis on pronouncing the German names correctly.

Addendum (after listening to and reading a second time): in some passages the author seems to have uncritically adopted the economic propaganda of his study object.

Das Buch beschreibt ausführlich die Rüstungspolitik des Dritten Reiches vor und während des Krieges und zieht dabei häufig den Vergleich zu den USA, dem British Empire und der Sowietunion. Der Fokus liegt auf der Produktion von Waffen und Munition, unterteilt nach Heer, Marine und Luftwaffe. Die allgemeine Versorgungslage mit Nahrung und wichtigen Rohstoffen wie Kohle, Öl und diversen Erzen sowie die daraus resultierenden Schritte von Verwaltung, Wehrmacht und SS werden ebenfalls beschrieben. Auch der Massenmord und das System der Konzentationslager und Zwangsarbeiter werden aus ökonomischer Sicht eingeordnet, ebenso der grobe Kriegsverlauf. Das Buch ist eine hervorragende Ergänzung zu anderer Kriegsliteratur, bei der ökonomische Aspekte leider oft zu kurz kommen. Der Sprecher ist sehr angenehm auf 1,5facher Geschwindigkeit. Adam Tooze spricht nur die Einführung selbst.

The narrator's pronunciation of "Reich" as "rice" was a major stumbling block for me. It created a jarring disconnect between the historical context and the delivery, particularly when discussing concepts like the "Reich bank" or the "Reich currency." The mispronunciation made it difficult to immerse myself in the story and appreciate the nuances of the historical period.
While the book itself appeared intriguing, the narrator's choice of pronunciation ultimately turned me off. It's a shame, as I was genuinely interested in the subject matter. To avoid similar disappointments in the future, I've learned a valuable lesson: always listen to samples before purchasing audiobooks. This simple step can save time and frustration, ensuring a more enjoyable listening experience.
