One of the reasons (besides the topic) was the fact that Robin Field's narrating style was steady, monotonous and "boring" (but in a good way; it wasn't distracting). But that means that the text has to capture your attention, which for me was not the case.

Maybe I did expect something different, maybe not so in-depth as this. There are many details about ancient civilizations, too much for the casual listener. I had a hard time to stay focused while commuting by public transport.

Robin Field did add some variation if the text provided/permitted it, like the quote of a poem or of someone else's account, but these were few and far between.

If you are really into the topic of ancient civilization then this might be for you. If you are just casually interested you should probably look for something else.

Keep in mind that the text is from the mid 1930s, so there could be some more recent discoveries and insights missing. The chapters in the audiobook do not correspond with the chapters of the actual book, which makes it difficult to find a specific passage. The chapters are also not labled, just numerated. The usual chapter lenght is about 60 minutes.
