Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history - Doom and Quake - until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry - a powerful and compassionate account of what it's like to be young, driven, and wildly creative.

    Kritikerstimmen

"Compelling . . . Masters of Doom succeeds on several levels. It's just great storytelling, with perfect pacing, drama and characterization. It's also an excellent business book, a cautionary tale with the kind of insider detail that other writers working in the genre should envy." ( Houston Chronicle)
“Kushner’s mesmerizing tale of the Two Johns moves at a rapid clip . . . describing the twists and turns of fate that led them to team up in creating the most powerful video games of their generation. . . . An exciting combination of biography and technology.” ( USA Today)
“Meticulously researched . . . as a ticktock of the creative process and as insight into a powerful medium too often dismissed as kids’ stuff, Masters of Doom blasts its way to a high score.” ( Entertainment Weekly)

Wil Wheaton is an incredible voice actor

I honestly found this book on the side of the road and decided since I had just played Doom: Eternal, that it would be a topical read. I expected absolutely nothing from it and even less from the audio book of it. But Wil Wheaton made this an incredible experience. I usually use an audiobook while I read the book to help me remain focused, also I read much much much more quickly with an audiobook because I would otherwise have to do my own sub-vocalization in my head, but I can't sub-vocalize as quickly as someone reading 3X on the audiobook. But I digress, I never looked at the book for this read because Wil Wheaton did such an amazing job. I was totally engaged in the book, and because he constantly uses a new and different voice for each character that is represented, I never lost track of who was speak and when. He even did a killer Bill Clinton impression! I kept this book at 1.5x the whole time and listened to it like a podcast, and it was an incredible and exciting read. What an important work of gaming history and what an excellent voice actor. 10/10 can absolutely recommend to anyone interesting in gaming, technology, and US culture.

must-read title for every 90s gamer kid

The level of detail in the historical journey from arcades and consoles to the rise of PC gaming and MMORPG is amazing and surprising.

It is as you were with them when they created Commander Keen, Doom or Quake.

Highly recommended trip down memory lane!

Just great... and perfectly read by Wil

Only caveat could be, that the book ends some years from now and the late history of ID is missing... PLEASE, David, do the next chapter as afterwords' afterword.

Else nothing can hinder from making this a clear 5-star book: Interesing, good style and some facts not so wellknown even to gamers. The two Johns and their child ID are described in colorful detail, showing the fun and hard work, those guys had and did to change the computer games world. Did they? Yeah, think so.

Wil Wheaton is at his best, the joy of reading this book is palpable in every sentence, a very good and easy hear even for non-mothertonguees like myself.

    Guter Sprecher, interessante Story

Wer sich für die Geschichte der Videospiele interessiert, kommt an Doom - und damit an der Firma id Software - nicht vorbei. Das Buch ist abwechslungsreich und kurzweilig. Ich kann es sehr empfehlen.
