angesichts der unübersehbaren sexistischen Grundüberzeugungen und der konsequenten Darstellung von Personen, die psychisch krank und/oder Opfer von Missbrauch geworden sind, als irrational und gewalttätig, kann man nur froh sein dass der Autor (laut Internet) mittlerweile nicht mehr als Psychotherapeut arbeitet

I loved the setting but I was very disappointed that the Maidens were not much more than exactly that: part of the setting. a background for another story. I wanted to know more about them, about their lives, their secret club, the dynamics between them. but the author made them side characters in Mariana's story. and Mariana's story wasn't half as interesting as the Maidens.
also, I'm so sick of weak female characters and stereotypical heterosexual man and this story has a lot of them...
still it was an easy read and some of the twists were well made. the ending did make sense in a way but it didn't gave me the speechless moment of realisation when everything comes together, that I expect from a story like that. all in all it was okay but not great.

A very thrilling audio book with a great narrator. The mystery was excellent and I didn't see the twist coming. I also enjoyed that there was a crossover moment with the authors first novel, The Silent Patient.

Furchtbar

Ich hatte „Die stumme Patientin“ von Alex Michaelides zuvor gehört und war begeistert gewesen. Der Plot dieses Buches klang ebenfalls sehr spannend, ist es aber leider gar nicht. Die in Selbstmitleid und Trauer zergehende Hauptfigur ist nach wenigen Kapiteln nicht mehr zu ertragen und man fragt sich die ganze Zeit, wann es denn endlich spannend wird… Da mich das Lamentieren der Hauptfigur irgendwann aggressiv gemacht hat, konnte ich das Buch nicht zu Ende hören. Nach dem, was in den anderen Rezensionen zu lesen ist, ist es aber scheinbar kein Verlust, leider. Weibliche Sprecherstimme top, dir männliche hat mir gar nicht zugesagt (ich mag es aber auch nicht, wenn Bücher von zwei Stimmen vorgelesen werden).
