Frankly I'm a little torn. For those who really want to know all that's going on behind the scenes, it's certainly worth the listen. Characters introduced in “Picard“ are given more and interesting background and some original characters of the novel are also really fun and interesting. The plot is not the fastest moving, not a whole lot happens that we don't already know, but there are cool bits. I doubt any casual viewer would miss any of them, though.
The narrative voice is very much of the kind I associate with ST novels, so if you know you're a fan of that, you'll probably enjoy Last Best Hope, too. For everyone else it will sound incredibly cheesy, especially during the first half before the story picks up. Similar, the moral of the story is bit heavy handed for my taste, but totally within Star Trek parameters.
My biggest pet pieve was probably that this set out to be a story about, or at least sympathetic towards the struggles of refugees (which I would have really appreciated), but in the end was once again only a story about the white saviour whose ethics are to be applauded. That said, there are certainly topics and questions explored that are very relevant to our day and age, packaged in a moving and interesting way.
The narrator is pleasent and I thought his “Picard-voice“ absolutely superb. All the females voices in contrast, I found rather annoying, bordering on stereotypical, which kicked me out of the story a couple of times, but that might just be personal preference.

Tl;dr: If you're really into Trek and looking for an easy fix, please go for it. If you're looking for high literature, better go somewhere else.

This is more than Star Trek & it is Star Trek and SciFi at it's best! Idealism and tragedy - what should and couldn't and now fittingly is the setting for the new (Best) Trek Series!

Phenominal!!!

No plotpoints, try hard dramatic story, endless repetitions, barely a real story, arrogant morality all over the place. Protagonists are perfect, everybody else esp. Romulans are stupid and evil...
But at least the speaker was fantastic!

Boring story about moral supremacy
