I want a louding voice.
14-year-old Adunni has a dream: to be educated. But her father needs her bride-price, so sells his daughter to an older man, who demands she give him the fine boy-children his first two wives have failed to produce.
When things go tragically wrong, Adunni flees to Lagos. It's what she has always wanted, to leave Ikati and see the world, and though her heart is full of sorrow for her lost family and the shame she has left behind, still Adunni will not be quiet and do as she's told.
Sold again as a housemaid to a successful businesswoman, she continues to question all she sees: why Big Madam, in her big house, has a cage of sadness round her soul; what happened to Rebecca, the girl who worked in her place before; and whether it is possible, when you are born into a life of no money and plenty suffering, to become a somebody of value.

Wonderfully told ❤️❤️❤️
I couldn’t put the book down. My heart was all over the place for our sweet Adunni…, I was happy, worried, laughing, crying, anxiously hoping and was so pleased to read the end. Adunni you have inspired me, with your beautiful louding voice. Thank you Abi Daré❤️

Wonderful book!!
I adored the book! I loved Adunni, hoped for her, cried for her, was amused by her way of speaking and was in awe with her tenacity and her will to fight for a better life! "Because tomorrow will be better than today". Absolutely recommendable!!

Loved this! Great performance.
I loved and adored Adunni! You shall definitely love her. I managed to see Nigeria from a traditional and the modern view from the eyes of a naive struggling little girl. The performance was really awesome. Great book.

Unbelievably good
Modern Nigeria through the eyes of a girl finding her way from poorness and exploitation to education,written in a unbelievably wonderful personal sort of pidgin English. The narrator makes it to an audio film you will always remember.

Wonderful story-telling
What an amazing and heart-felt story, and one of the best narrations i’ve ever listened to. Well done Abi Dare, I will forever recommend this book.
