I’m a woman, and I loved listening to this audiobook a while ago. But when I recently returned to it, I noticed that every “man” had been changed to “woman.” Even the stories Florence Scovel Shinn told — which originally featured men — now suddenly have female characters instead. Did I miss a memo? Is this version no longer meant for men?

Shinn clearly used “man” to mean all of humanity. Rewriting her words and examples to match someone else’s idea of what’s acceptable today doesn’t make the message more inclusive — on the contrary, it limits a message that was always meant for everyone.
