Inhaltsangabe

In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one.

He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything.

Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game.

Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities.

With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job.

His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Surprisingly, not a whole lot changed. Politicians were still corrupt. Banks still held onto your money. And criminals still committed crime.

Though the black market has become more readily available.

And in that not-so-black market, Felix discovers he has a way to make his power useful after all, and grasps a hold of his chance with both hands.

Warning and minor spoiler: This novel contains graphic violence, undefined relationships/partial harem, unconventional opinions/beliefs, and a hero who is as tactful as a dog at a cat show. Listen at your own risk.

Cringy harem fantasy

i could not get the first three hours. dude collects cute super hero girls as slaves. I expect him to fuck them all eventually but really don't want to listen. wish I could refund but can't find the option.

Avoid unless you like bad fanfic of an incel.

Story is great but Performance is awful

I'm currently listening to it the second time after finishing the third book. The story is great, I like the characters, tho a few kind of feel half arsed, the setting is interesting, a super hero world with different powers (I usually don't like super hero stuff) and I love the protagonist. He's smart, but vulnerable, believable and stays true to his motives.

What I absolutely dislike however is the Performance. Jeff Hays can learn a lot from Ray Porter. At first I thought Nick Podehl was kind of bad, but I quickly warmed up to him. Jeff Hays however is just simply awful. He sounds like he doesn't care, every second line feels out of context and he always sounds the same. No emotions whatsoever. If you like a pleasant voice in your ear I can absolutely not recommend this, which is a real shame, since the story is awesome

I am still waiting for the story

Honestly, this book is not to be recommended. It lacks everything that makes a story great but sexy women. And that only means that we should better wait for the film.

The character development is... erratic. The character and his attitude changes. But it just happens. It is done.
Most of the book I couldn't make out any goal. It was apparently purely reactionary. That's not per se bad if the reactions are worthwhile, but here they are in a way random, just to fulfil plot needs.
And lastly, my biggest issues. The book's characters do not tackle problems. Those problems are magicked away by simple deus ex machina. Hey, here is this legal problem. One of the few that was built up for longer than a chapter. Tell a lawyer to solve it. Done. Here is the other problem. Tell some else to solve it. That character responds that she already did so.

And whenever there is a tight moment, the main protagonist simply creates a new superpower. Why hasn't he before? Well, he hasn't thought about it. Get used to that explanation. If that guy wouldn't have the greatest lack of imagination possible, there wouldn't be a book at all. If any of us had his powers, we would end the whole damn book after a chapter.

I am not sure if I try the second book. In the last two chapters, the quality rose a little. It had meaning. A goal. I wonder if the risen quality carries over. But I would definitely advise anyone against trying this book and I will definitely listen to a few others first.

Sometimes lengthy

The story idea is pretty unique and well carried ou. However, as another reviewer already wrote, the extremely tiresome reading of what I suppose are stats tables in the printed book kills the storyline at the most exciting places. The voice actor does a good job of enacting all persons differently. His reading, though, always gives the impression of being out of breath, and he finishes his sentences somewhat "pressed". All in all, a nice enough story that every other chapter brought up thoughts of returning the book to Audible.

A cookie-clicker in book form

This book is like the listening equivalent of an audible cookie clicker. So for me it was addicting.
I love Jeff Hays's reading. He gives all characters voices that very much enhance the experience without overdoing it.
All in all this book is a power fantasy. It does have stakes and the characters sometimes struggle but the main enjoyment comes from seeing the characters succeed and spending time with them.
This Video Game Plotline Tester and Morningwood were my favourite 'light entertainment'-books in the last few months. In fact this book made me completely stop my more serious books until i finished it - like i said, i was addicted.
I thibk you will be able to enjoy it if you have not played any video-games but you should be ready to just accept some things that feel very 'gamey'.

Messed up but fun

The story is fast paced and managed to keep me engaged the whoöe way through. The plot is, well there. A lot of questions go unanswered the villains don't have much of a character or motivation besides being there. But strong supporting characters make up for that.
There are quite a number of "status windows" that translate horribly to audio after hearing twice i just skipped them.

So good, I'm lacking the appropriate adjective

Welchen drei Worte würden für Sie Super Sales on Super Heroes treffend charakterisieren?

I'm listening to audio books daily for at least 2,5 hours. Some of them are good, some not so. But this one was outstanding. I must admit, the first 30 (?) minutes I was definitely not convinced and I remember that I was briefly thinking about returning the book, but I'm so glad I didn't.
The story is truly unique. It has a rich set of round characters, some a bit exaggerated, but it makes them even more lovely.
Jeff Hays did a really great job of bringing every single one life and give them a unique character.
What confused me in the beginning, but helped me to dive even deeper into the story were the "sound effects" when Felix was thinking or someone was talkin on the phone, great!
I often get bothered when I hear a new audio book and realize that this was just the beginning of (another) series I have to follow, but when I realized it this time, I was simply relieved that the story will go on.
Just saw that book #2 was released some days ago and I hope it will be available as audio book soon.
Can't wait, recommend it highly!
