Über diesen Titel

Artificial intelligence (AI) was nearly mankind’s last invention. AI took off like a rocket, then when it racked up an impressive death toll, it crashed before it could blossom and took most high-tech industries with it. Resistance and fears became deep-set.

Two decades after the infamous Rev. 4.6 incidents, humanity hasn’t quit dreaming of the wealth and power that could be at their fingertips. A new generation of mega corporations rose from the ashes. When one melds a quantum computer to a barely functional mental patient as a PR move, there are those who seek to profit, those who want to destroy it, and Alex.

Alex Sage is a typical college student trying to keep up his grades and, maybe, find a meaningful connection with the fairer sex. Then, an automated semi crashes into his home, killing his family and turning his head into a pincushion in the process.

Alex awakens to find most of his memories gone and an illegal AI hidden in his brain implant. Now the pet project of a tech billionaire and heavily in debt, Alex struggles to stay valuable enough to be kept online. Still grappling with the repercussions of his injuries and threats from a dangerous anti-augmentation political movement, there are no easy answers, and threats loom around every corner. Alex must use whatever resources he can to escape from under the thumb of a ruthless corporation, while keeping those he comes to love safe.

Disclaimer: This book embraces cyberpunk ideology in parts. Expect sex, drugs, and anarchy against the establishment. It embraces an antihero protagonist and is not fade to black.

The book is an easy listening experience. It doesn't deal with any strong cyberpunk concepts (what is self, what is human, what is machine) and barely scratches other tropes (how does augmentation influence humanity as a whole). But the world building is nice, the descriptions are vivid and on physical media, it would be an absolute page turner.
...
But there is WAY too much sexy time in this. A whole chapter is just them having sex... and it is completely unnecessary for the general story. The book may almost be put into the "Harem Fantasy"-novel category...

[Minor and very superficial spoilers]

There is very very little adversity and it mostly feels like a teenage boy's fantasy... "what if I had an imaginary friend that turns out to be a virtual lady? And that nurse? Totally has the hots for me. And any other lady I meet? TOTALLY have the hots for me. And my girlfriend? Totally a polyamorous bisexual that loves the idea of me doing another lady.
And then I get a house and all the hot ladies I meet move in with me.
And any time there is emotional trouble brewing, I make a funny joke and everybody laughs and we hug.

Near-future Scifi + too much sexy times

I absolutely love this and I really think it would make for a good movie (or movies?). There's just so goddamn much happening in this book yet it all feels coherent and never seems like a slog or filler. I especially like the twist on the romantic relationship of the main characters and how it normalizes non conservative relationships without really fetishizing or kink shaming anything, just some characters having the time of their life's and everyone's ok with it and yeah just realized that could be seen as a spoiler...sorry. Of course there's more to this book than the relationships of the characters. Take it's political, moral and ethical topics for example, though going into detail and that is most definitely a spoiler and would make for an even longer review.

Where's the movie?
