Über diesen Titel
Born in fire. Tempered in blood.
Epheria is a land divided by war and mistrust. The High Lords of the South squabble and fight, only kept in check by the Dragonguard, traitors of a time long past, who serve the empire of the North.
In the remote villages of Southern Epheria, still reeling from the tragic loss of his brother, Calen Bryer prepares for The Proving - a test of courage and skill that not all survive. But when three strangers arrive in the village of Milltown, with a secret they are willing to die for, Calen’s world is ripped from under him and he is thrust headfirst into a war that has been raging for centuries.
There is no prophecy. His coming was not foretold. He bleeds like any man, and bleed he will.
Includes bonus story The Fall.
©2021 Ryan Cahill (P)2021 Podium AudioIntricate magic system, lore, action and lovable characters. The pacing of the plot was great and enjoyed the writing story. It was very digest able without being confusing.
Absolutely recommend reading the novella because it's even better than the novel.
Amazing start to a great new epic fantasy series. And also phenomenal narration of the audiobook.
Highly recommend! Phenomenal series!

I really enjoyed the beginning and setting of the first book: a very wholesome place, a group of young friends and adventures coming to their home to get them to act. I really loved the first location, the glade. I had high hopes and felt really inspired.
From there on I had some major issues with the writing: first of all everything was always focused on mentioning how great the main characters are, how special and good without really giving much reason to share their opinions. Everybody says it so I guess it must be true? Plus literally every main character was not only special in terms of discovering special skills but even within those skills they were great. That's also why I consider this a series aimed at young adult - the theme is repeated every 2-3 chapters, a young man's dream come true.
The glorification of violence while always mentioning how terrible violence is but how necessary in this case added another layer to the "shonen" character of this. The author seems to be trying to add justifications for everything but overall violence doesn't really have consequences or at least they are not in the focus of the story.
The two other main issues I had with the series is that the speaking of foreign languages always had the language spelled out and the very kitchy translation mentioned afterwards. (not going to spoil anything but the sheer cringe was hard to stand.)
And obviously the author has never ever seen a real sword fight, focused 20% of the character progression on advancing the characters sword fighting skills. Metal armour is cleaved in two by swords, all main characters are raging war machines and if someone dies the character has not really been explored before.
So overall: it's ok to listen to this while doing other things but unless you are really into the fantasy of being the beloved chosen one (and dragons) I'd recommend something else.
A fantasy series for young adults
