Über diesen Titel
Darcy's got the wealth and wit, but Elizabeth's heart is already spoken for. Cue the romance and shenanigans, because the game of love is about to get serious.
**Elizabeth Bennet**
It was supposed to be simple: come back to Derbyshire, see childhood friends, maybe fall in love. But that was before I realized George Darcy, the boy I’d set my heart on when I was just thirteen, was engaged to Lady Lucilla.
Things I didn't expect this week:
1. Realizing I still had feelings for George. (Old habits die hard.)
2. Being warned off by his oh-so-serious older brother. (As if I’d listen!)
3. Finding myself in the middle of a love square? Love rhombus? Whatever it’s called.
4. Being oddly drawn to the older Darcy brother. (His eyes... that's all I’m saying.)
5. Being the unintentional wrench in a seemingly perfect engagement.
6. Participating in the wittiest banter battles of my life. (With Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome, no less.)
7. Maybe... just maybe... reconsidering where my heart truly lies.
**Fitzwilliam Darcy**
I pride myself on being the responsible Darcy. But responsibility gets a tad complicated when Elizabeth Bennet storms back into our lives.
This week’s unforeseen complications:
1. Trying to keep my wayward brother, George, on the straight and narrow. (Impossible.)
2. Watching Elizabeth, with her sparkling eyes and razor-sharp wit, aim for George’s heart. (Torture.)
3. Reminding myself I'm trying to keep her away for George’s own good. (A lie I keep telling myself.)
4. Finding it increasingly challenging to keep my distance. (Why does she have to be so... captivating?)
5. Becoming entangled in a mess of love, loyalty, and longing.
6. Wishing, for the first time in my life, that I wasn’t the responsible one.
7. Realizing that perhaps it's my heart that's at stake in this unexpected game of romance.
©2024 Alix James (P)2024 Alix JamesSeven years later Elizabeth is part of her new family, the Bennets, and is loved by her sisters and parents. She has even adopted their name. But then an opportunity arises to travel with her aunt Gardiner to Derbyshire to tend to a relative. She longs to see her childhood home again and learn about her former brothers Fitzwilliam and George, as for George she still has tender feelings. She also hopes to gain answers why she had to leave without explanation.
Fitzwilliam Darcy on his part is stunned when he encounters Elizabeth, now a grown beautiful lady, again. He also hopes for answers according to her departure seven years ago. But he also needs to keep Elizabeth and George apart because George recently became engaged to a wealthy heiress. But with occupying Elizabeth he more and more loses his own heart to her. Is he willing to allow his heart to win over duty? Will he be able to win Elizabeth's heart although she is still taken in by George? And what about the secrets concerning Elizabeth's origin?
The book is very well written by the author Alix James and a delight to read. Elizabeth is not a Bennet by birth in this story and she shares a former relationship with the Darcy family because she stayed several years with them. This means that she knows both Darcy brothers rather well because she grew up with them. This does not prevent misunderstandings but Elizabeth and the brothers are able to more easily read the other and more openly interact with one another. This closeness and Elizabeth's infatuation with George also leads to some rivalry between the Darcy siblings, mainly because Darcy wants to keep them apart due to George's recent betrothal. But Darcy's and Elizabeth's main concern is to search for reasons why Elizabeth had to leave and try to navigate through their feelings for one another.
I like Darcy in this story very much, he is totally swoon-worthy. I like that he is more open because at the beginning Elizabeth is like a sister to him who knows him all his life. He is not too guarded and has no fears to be trapped by a fortune hunter. I like to see this relaxed but focused man who is able to navigate through (nearly) all obstacles. And the kitchen scenes between him and Elizabeth are so sweet. At the beginning he only wanted to save her from George but he had better saved his own heart 😉.
For all I love Darcy I want to shake his brother George. He is so self-centred, so careless, so reckless, everything his elder brother is not and will never be. I don't like George very much and I am glad that he already has found a betrothed and is no prospect for Elizabeth. She definitely needs the "good" Darcy not the "bad" 😉. But for her struggles to find her way to the "good" Darcy I wanted to shake Elizabeth sometimes, too. I wanted to point her at George's behaviour and say to her that he is not worthy of her.
Throughout the whole book the mystery about Elizabeth's origins is lurking in the background and making things complicated for Elizabeth and the Darcy siblings. The truth is only revealed at the end, finally granting Elizabeth with answers.
The story was narrated by Benjamin Fife. I always like his narrations very much, this audiobook is no exception. The audiobook is told from Darcy and Elizabeth’s first person narrative but he narrated both sides extremely well. One was always able to find out which persons are part of a scene. I already enjoyed the book very much as soon as it was out but the audiobook is even better. For me it is definitely an audiobook to re-listen to.
If you like a story where Elizabeth and Darcy are at the beginning as close as siblings but nevertheless fall in love after encountering one another again and the mystery about Elizabeth's origins lurking over it all, you should definitely listen to this audiobook.
I highly recommend it.
