Über diesen Titel

Claudia Hampton - beautiful, famous, independent, dying. But she remains defiant to the last, telling her nurses that she will write a 'history of the world...and in the process, my own'. And it is her story, from a childhood just after the First World War through the Second and beyond.

But Claudia's life is entwined with others, and she must allow those who knew her, loved her, the chance to speak, to put across their points of view. There is Gordon, brother and adversary; Jasper, her untrustworthy lover and father of Lisa, her cool, conventional daughter; and then there is Tom, her one great love, found and lost in wartime Egypt.

Great story, more than the sum of its parts. Towards the end of her life, Claudia Hamilton - journalist, historian, author, all-round formidable lady - contemplates her life and ambitiously entwines it with “a history of the world”. Indeed, she starts with the origins of life and links different events to her own life, loves and actions. Most memorable was her time as a war journalist in Cairo. The main characters of her life: brother, lovers, daughter, sister-in-law have bit-parts and the past and present, first and third person narration all meld into one. A fascinating story told in a mesmerising, twisting way, with many philosophical thoughts on the passage of time - this book delighted and moved me.

Outstanding book - deservedly winning the Booker prize in 1987
