It’s been my second novel by T.J. Reid and I’m becoming a fan!
The story revolving around star singer Mick Riva and his estranged children is entertaining, yet interestingly layered and well told. I especially liked the portraits of even less significant characters.
The reader transported the different characters well without sounding too artificial.
A definite recommendation!

This book was easy to listen to, even though the structure was a bit unusual. It was emotional and empathetic and story-driven. I liked the sprinkled life truths. Overall, pretty enjoyable.

Spannend konstruiert, ein Tag mit ganz vielen Rückblenden, ich wollte unbedingt wissen, wie es weitergeht und konnte kaum pausieren.

I know a lot of people enjoyed this book but I just thought it was very boring sometimes. The narrator did an amazing job though.

5/5 - I love this book. I listened to the audio book version and it was an amazing, dramatic, exciting rollercoaster ride. The writing is very unique and fast-paced. I have never read a book like this before - this one cast a special spell on me. So many characters, so many individual stories intertwined into a very big story and still I felt like I got to know all characters very well. Their pasts, present and future. The writing is just to the point. Every sentence is meaningful, every word hits the aim. This format of writing is totally my thing. I can listen to this story or read it on and on. I think I like this writing even more than „Seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo“. And that is a big thing to say, isn’t it? Please make a TV Series out of this!

Best audio book I listend to this year!

I had expected a description of an escalating party, but this was much more. A compelling family saga with many relatable and some difficult characters that culminates in a life changing evening. While there is much tragedy in this family’s lives there is also a lot of love and trust and reliability. I found the story very interesting.
The speaker is also very good.

Ich habe dieses Buch im Hoch-Sommer am See gelesen und war während diesem Zeitraum gefühlt in Malibu. Sehr spannende, gut geschildertes Familienepos, glaubhafte Darstellung einer Familie, generationenübereifend, im Surfermilieu in Malibu. Konnte das spannende Buch kaum aus der legen. Absolut empfehlenswert.

It was really enjoyable to listen to. Not what I expected. I thought it was going to be this story of a party. But it was so mich more.

Family is a complex thing

Malibu Rising was an okay-ish read. I liked the flashbacks to June and Mick Riva and the way the author structured the plot overall. However, at the same time I felt that most of the characters - especially the main characters - where underdeveloped because the author included so many different perspectives, introduced so many side-characters that ultimately didn't add anything to the overall story. It got confusing and sometimes frustrating because it felt like the author was stalling. All in all, TJR offered an interesting gimps into the Malibu of the 1980ties and created relatable main characters but I'm not sure I'll pick up another book by this author.
