Über diesen Titel

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition.

At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

A really great story, very lovely characters, read by best narrator of all. An absolute recommendation.

A great story

I loved the narration and the story. The conversation at the end with the author helped so much to understand the meaning and lesson behind the story.

So so so good!!

I LOVE THIS BOOK!! It made me cry and it's so beautifully written! However I didn't like Ethan's voice..

Masterpiece

I liked all of Jenkins Reid’s book quite a lot, but unfortunately this is my least favorite. I don’t mind the story and really liked her idea behind it (as shown in the interview at the end). However, the characters felt so one-dimensional. I know nothing about Mark other than his dog-allergy and him working late a lot. There is no context in the relationship, I can’t feel why he is married to Gabby. Similarly, there are so few details about the fabric of the relationship between Hannah and Henry or Ethan. They both support her and love her eating cinnamon rolls. But where are the details and quirks? How do they differ? Overall the whole book felt flat to me. I also don’t understand why Gabby is so sure of keeping the baby? She never questions it, neither does Gabby, but there is a short sentence about supporting the right of choice. It feels so incredible that someone so lost in life doesn’t even hesitate to consider this option. I would have needed more to be convinced.
Also, very very American: one of the three building blocks of life is owning a car. People chose to have a baby but work full time and go to school on the side and see this as a positive thing. Where is the social support for her to be able to spend time with her child and get an education. And why doesn’t the father of the baby have to pay child support? And (almost) everyone gets with their high school sweetheart. Relationships are viewed as flawed because they were “with the wrong person”, instead of them not having worked on their relationship enough (even before marriage).

I felt quite aggravated by the book and recommend listening to some of her other (later?) books.

Story ok, but characters lacking
