Now 29, they are struggling to remember why — or even if — they still love each other, so they decide to take a year-long break. Whelan perfectly captures the arc of their relationship, which moves from awkward college flirting to the caustic sniping of a marital fight over something truly stupid. Her skill at narrating the everyday is both a strength and a flaw: For some this performance might be too uncomfortably like their own lives laid bare, while for others it could be deeply cathartic. Whelan also gives depth and personality to secondary characters, who are generally underdeveloped in the text."

This is one of my favorites this year. The author captures problems of the every day life in a marriages/ long relationship, the characters grow and u can root for every decision they seem to make. I fell in love with all of the people whose life u are sharing.

Overall I enjoyed this book a lot, the reader was essy to follow and entertaining and the interview at the end quite illuminating. That being said, from a European perspective the novel is sometimes somewhat superficial/cringy/american- especially in the beginning which does not allow for any ambivalence in the relationship amongst the main protagonists. That is a pity as the author clearly states that she wanted a more nuanced, not black and white picture of marriage and yet the ending appears somewhat ‘happily ever after’. Not only does the romance prevail but the idea of parenthood (as the major achievement in life) comes up, which does not really cater to this more nuanced/ feminist lense the author seeks to employ. But the side characters are quite interesting and overall a good read

Unglaublich, dass eine Autorin so grossartige Bücher wie "Seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo" und "Malibu Rising" schreiben kann, und dann ein so banales Buch. Offensichtlich ist die Zielgruppe die Leserin / Hörerin unter 25 Jahre. Happily ever after! Die Message: Die Ehe muss erhalten bleiben, weil man sich einmal dafür entschieden hat. Nun ja - wenn man bedenkt dass es 2014 geschrieben wurde , als "sex positive" noch kein Wort war. Nicht zeitgemäß und ohne Tiefgang! Ich habe es nur wegen der Sprecherin zu Ende gehört.
