Viele Leser waren offenbar enttäuscht, weil das alte Verbrechen nicht aufgeklärt wird. Mir blieb die resultierende Frustration erspart, da ich darüber vorgewarnt war, darum erwähne ich es hier. Ich fand dieses offene Ende keineswegs störend, sondern realistisch und sehr interessant, denn der alte Fall reizt zu Spekulationen.
Die englische Aussprache des Sprechers macht Sinn, weil zwar die Handlung in Irland spielt, der Ich-Erzähler aber seit seiner Schulzeit in einem englischen Internat den irischen Dialekt/Akzent abgelegt und die englische Sprechweise angenommen hat - so vollständig, daß er, zurück in Irland, häufig für einen Engländer gehalten wird.

The story itself is interesting, the fact that not all mysteries from the past are solved, didn't bother me. However what I did find annoying was the whingy protagonist. That said, I wouldn't mind listening to the sequel of the story (The Likeness), but unfortunately audible only offers the abridged German version of it (Totengleich).
Why not an Irish Reader?

Für mich liegt die Wahrheit in der Mitte: Ja, für den Ich-Erzähler macht es Sinn, 'britisch' zu klingen. Aber für alle anderen Charaktere leider nicht!
Der Roman erzählt eine dunkle Geschichte, deren Atmosphäre für mich nicht aufkam, weil jeder Charakter (der nicht gerade motzt, schnäuzt oder schreit) leicht ironisch klingt. Und ich meine tatsächlich leicht und ironisch. Eine düstere Geschichte über Kindesmord und schwere Psychotraumata klingt dadurch in großen Teilen wie ein Dinnerempfang auf Downton Abbey!
Ich hätte mich über irisches Lokalkolorit in Form von Akzenten gefreut und finde es ein Defizit des Lesers, dass er das nicht bietet.
Die Geschichte selbst ist gut, ein cleverer Kriminalfall, interessante Figuren. Blieb für mich aber durch den Leser leider nur an der Oberfläche und ohne Atmosphäre war mir die Story zu lang.
