Love is cheap. Love is cruel. Love can’t save us.

Victor Lang had everything—looks, money, fame. A chance to become the greatest swimmer in history. Until a failed dope test brought him crashing down.

According to the rumors, he turned into a recluse, a drug addict, a whore. Broken beyond repair. Incapable of love.

And for some reason, he’s set his sights on me.

A freak accident in his pool throws me into a world of wealth and status and people who are willing to do anything to get what they want. Before I know it, I’m being paid to fly to Italy and pose as his boyfriend. Trapped at his side, I learn what it means to truly hate someone.

Turns out, that’s exactly what he wants.

I can’t save him, and I can’t love him. But as things fall apart and I discover the truths he’s hiding, I learn that hate can be greater than love—an obsession, a prayer, dark days and darker nights, a need to be the only one who hurts him. Hate can heal the worst wounds love leaves behind.

But I have problems of my own, a broken spirit and loved ones to protect. And I’m scared to face the things he’s waking up inside of me.

A gritty, emotional, epic hate-to-love slow burn with an inexperienced top and his bratty bottom, hurt/comfort, obsession, and healing.

Contains dark themes, adult content, and potential triggers, though every effort was made to portray them thoughtfully and sensitively.

Specific triggers (potential spoilers): sexual abuse (off the page), suicidal ideation, drug abuse, disordered eating, trauma, death, mental illness, homophobic language

This was my first read by Riley Nash, and I was completely hooked.

This story is heavy, intense, heartbreaking, and gripping all at once—but thank God it comes with a hard-earned HEA. Please, please read the trigger warnings before starting, because many themes are deeply disturbing and may be difficult to digest for some readers.

Ethan and Viktor couldn’t be more different. Both are in their mid-twenties, yet they live in entirely different worlds—while somehow still feeling painfully relatable.

Ethan is a deeply layered character, mature far beyond his years. He works multiple jobs to support his beloved mother, who is battling dementia, sacrificing his college education without hesitation. He struggles with anxiety, is stoic and serious on the surface, but underneath carries a huge heart and a profound love for animals.

Viktor, on the other hand, comes from immense wealth, yet his life is anything but privileged in the ways that truly matter. He’s drowning in past trauma and severe depression after losing a once-promising professional swimming career. Despite his financial security, he is profoundly lonely, deeply misunderstood, self-destructive, and trapped under the emotional control of his manipulative father. His thoughts and behavior in the first half of the book are difficult to understand—sometimes shocking and deeply unsettling. But once the why is revealed, everything begins to make sense, and my heart absolutely shattered for him.

Watching Ethan and Viktor slowly open up to one another and grow together was both painful and beautiful. There were moments where I genuinely believed there would be no HEA—and honestly, I braced myself for it. So when it finally came after all that suffering, it felt incredibly earned and emotional.

🎧 Narration:
The audiobook narration was exactly what I expected from two of my absolute favorites—top-notch.
Stephen Dexter nailed Ethan perfectly and carried the majority of the POVs with emotional depth and consistency.
J. F. Harding did an outstanding job portraying Viktor’s vulnerability, sarcasm, sadness, and inner turmoil—it was raw and heartbreaking.

🔥 Spice & Writing:
The spice was intense, though not as frequent as I expected. The writing itself was beautiful yet emotionally brutal, with no unnecessary filler—though there were a few minor editorial errors.

📊 Breakdown:
• Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
• Spice: ⭐⭐⭐
• Character Development: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
• Narration: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a gut-wrenching, emotionally demanding story, but one that stayed with me long after finishing—and I will absolutely be reading more from this author.
