The Sunday Times best seller
This is Britain as you've never heard it.
This is Britain as it has never been told.
From Newcastle to Cornwall, from the birth of the 20th century to the teens of the 21st, Girl, Woman, Other follows a cast of 12 characters on their personal journeys through this country and the last hundred years. They're each looking for something - a shared past, an unexpected future, a place to call home, somewhere to fit in, a lover, a missed mother, a lost father, even just a touch of hope....
Kritikerstimmen
"The actress Anna-Maria Nabirye projects the characters superbly: she has a full, low timbre and a powerful directness." (The Times)
"Masterful...A choral love song to black womanhood in modern Great Britain." (Elle)
"Ambitious, flowing and all-encompassing, an offbeat narrative that'll leave your mind in an invigorated whirl...[It] unites poetry, social history, women's voices and beyond." (Stylist)

Geschichte
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

In February 2014, Reni Eddo-Lodge posted an impassioned argument on her blog about her deep-seated frustration with the way discussions of race and racism in Britain were constantly being shut down by those who weren't affected by it. She gave the post the title 'Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race'. Her sharp, fiercely intelligent words hit a nerve, and the post went viral, spawning a huge number of comments from people desperate to speak up about their own similar experiences.

After three decades as a trailblazing writer, teacher and activist, she moved from the margins to centre stage, taking her place in the spotlight at last. Her journey was a long one, but she made it, and she made history. 'I would like to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently....' What does feminism mean today? In this personal, eloquently argued essay - adapted from her much-admired TEDx talk of the same name - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers listeners a unique definition of feminism for the 21st century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness.

Audio Book inadequate
I need to emphasize my respect and honour to the writer book and the performer of the audio book. However the audio book fails to carry the worth and essence of the vision of the book. The book tells the stories of 12 persons whose voices are less heard in literature. I hoped the stories would be told differently too. I particularly did not like the performers wrong pronunciations of Kwame A. Appiah's name and the Nigerian and carribean accents were not adequate. As the book advocates for voices to be heard, it would have been nice to get 12 persons who could do this and make the book come as alive as possible. I am sorry also is my comment comes accross as harsh but I really think the liberation of voices and also providing the platform for all voices would have helped in projecting the honor of this book.

Was the aim to educate or to annoy?
The book was written without punctuation, which the speaker decided to reflect by lifting her voice at the end of the logical end of a sentence. While I laud this attempt to mimic the written form of the book, the result was a line-up of what sounded like endless questions or statements by a perpetually insecure person. And, yes, it was as annoying to listen to as it sounds!
As regards the story, it was a mix of modern "issues", with the equally modern underlying complaint about the inequalites of life. The characters were often lacking the ability to reflect on their actions and on what impact these actions might have on their own lives and on that of their offspring.
In short, it's fair to say that I did not much enjoy listening to this audio book and despite the critical acclaim that it received, I really can not recommend it.
