#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work, the inspiration for HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon

“The thrill of Fire & Blood is the thrill of all Martin’s fantasy work: familiar myths debunked, the whole trope table flipped.”—Entertainment Weekly

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley—including five all-new illustrations exclusive to this edition. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

Includes a bonus PDF of illustrations from the book

Kritikerstimmen

“A masterpiece of popular historical fiction.” (The Sunday Times)

“[Fire & Blood] explores the dragon-fueled secrets upon which the current saga is built." (Hollywood Reporter)

“[There are] treasures hidden in this new Targaryen history.” (Vanity Fair)

"Martin has done it again.... [Fire & Blood is] a beautiful weaving of the wars, marriages, deaths, dragons, and politics that shape the world Martin has created, leaving the reader feeling like this is a true history rather than a piece of fantasy. This is a masterpiece of world-building.... Beyond Martin’s legions of fans, anyone with a taste for richly, even obsessively detailed historical fiction or fantasy about royalty will enjoy this extraordinary work.” (Booklist, starred review)

“The saga is a rich and dark one, full of both the title’s promised elements....It’s hard not to thrill to the descriptions of dragons engaging in airborne combat, or the dilemma of whether defeated rulers should ‘bend the knee,’ ‘take the black’ and join the Night’s Watch, or simply meet an inventive and horrible end.” (The Guardian)

Obviously everyone is waiting for the Winds of Winter and the question is, why would the author waste his time and focus on this pointless drivel. It doesn’t tie anything together and even stops short of the only character I hoped to hear a bit more about (“Egg”)
It creates a background which no one asked for with characters of zero relevance to the ones from Ice and Fire!
This is just a big waste of time, one is better off reading/listening to a real history book. I recommend instead “The Romanovs, 1613-1918”, actually extremely similar, about the rise and fall of a ruling house over 10 generations, with lots of details on interpersonal relationships, politics and wars. Thinking about it, it might have inspired this book, only the it ACTUALLY HAPPENED!

I hope I’ll live to read the Winds of Winter, but since GoT has already overtaken it and the main story line is out, it might make G.R.R. Martin even less likely to finish it.

Not what you expect in a G.R.R. Martin Novel

Perfect Reading adapted to the fictional world of Westeros narrated with all its bloody details of men and dragonfire.

Historiography with Dragons

this book is in my opinion only for those who are not satisfied with small antidotes of SoI&F history.

loved this audio book, I read about a third of the book via a hard copy but the audio book is just something on another level. Great narration as well as the book has an amazing story overall. Game of thrones fans will love this history of targaryans and Westeros. CANT WAIT FOR VOLUME 2

Amazing

If you enjoy history and don’t mind getting confused by all the different (or same) names, this might be for you.
The speaker’s voice is enjoyable to listen to and it’s really interesting to now watch the show and figure out what actually happened, considering, that the narrators of the book are all heavily influenced by their political stand during the dance.
I sometimes had to re-listen to some of it, because everything is connected and if you miss a part, it might get confusing later on.

It’s like listening to a history book, but with dragons!

Would this be a stand alone book- "a history of a fictional dynasty"- , I could agree with some critiques that call it an utter crap. I also would agree that it might be just "dry history"- but that's what history normally is for someone who is not a history buff like me ;).

However, GRRM's "Song if Ice and Fire" (SOIF), like JRRT's LOTR, is an outstanding and and rightfully masterpiece, because the story has so much depth, is so thought through, so full of background information, (and not so far fedged, pathetic and self contradictory fantasy novels offen are),
that the actual story has a "natural" and credible flow. And one of those features that make the story so lively, is its history, the characters of SOIF often refer to!!

I've therefore enjoyed following the Targaryen dynasty in their path to glory and doom (and I have red drier history books that this one before. However I only hope I'll never meet some foolish fan who studies this stuff ;))
The story's style is well enough written I didn't despair until the end, when I leaned that Martin had done his vanishing act once again, with the book ending with half the history untold :(

A history book to a story

However much I like the story of game of thrones, it is not very entertaining to listen to a storyline with no actual character interaction. Of course I would like to know how Egon the concerer came to rule over the seven kingdoms, but not by reading it like a history book in school!
I guess only hardcore fans would be interested in this history lesson.

Only for hardcore fans!
