Über diesen Titel

From one of the world's foremost experts on the subject, a powerful argument that the greatest damage from drugs flows from their being illegal, and a hopeful reckoning with the possibility of their use as part of a responsible and happy life

Dr. Carl L. Hart, Ziff Professor at Columbia University and former chair of the Department of Psychology, is one of the world's preeminent experts on the effects of so-called recreational drugs on the human mind and body. Dr. Hart is open about the fact that he uses drugs himself, in a happy balance with the rest of his full and productive life as a colleague, husband, father, and friend. In Drug Use for Grown-Ups, he draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use--not drugs themselves--have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country's enduring structural racism.

Dr. Hart did not always have this view. He came of age in one of Miami's most troubled neighborhoods at a time when many ills were being laid at the door of crack cocaine. His initial work as a researcher was aimed at proving that drug use caused bad outcomes. But one problem kept cropping up: the evidence from his research did not support his hypothesis. From inside the massively well-funded research arm of the American war on drugs, he saw how the facts did not support the ideology. The truth was dismissed and distorted in order to keep fear and outrage stoked, the funds rolling in, and black and brown bodies behind bars.

Drug Use for Grown-Ups will be controversial, to be sure: the propaganda war, Dr. Hart argues, has been tremendously effective. Imagine if the only subject of any discussion about driving automobiles was fatal car crashes. Drug Use for Grown-Ups offers a radically different vision: when used responsibly, drugs can enrich and enhance our lives. We have a long way to go, but the vital conversation this book will generate is an extraordinarily important step.

I knew Dr. Carl Hart like many others from the JRE Podcast. I'm a Med-Student with a BA in Psychology and maybe this stems from a professional perspective, but I hoped for more. More clinical relations, more numbers and papers, more biochemical theory. But I understand, that I might be a special case with this opinion. It helped me revolutionise my beliefs about drugs and will have an impact on my own upcoming clinical practice. It also made a convincing case that the drug policies have been used for racist purposes. I'm never quickly convinced this is the case, I guess because normally those accusations come from SJWs, but at the end of this book and having the properly researched evidence at hand, there's no denying anymore. I still think SJWs are shit, Hippies and overly spiritual people, who don't just do what they do but form an identity around it, annoy the hell out of me, but I don't think that you should never take any drugs beyond weed anymore. In times of corona, I have to admit my physical condition is quite bad. But as soon as I start working out again and have a week or two off work, I might try little controlled doses of something. Overall, a great book, highly recommended, but still I would've wished for more. What was there was awesome. The author reads a little slowly and inconsistently at times, but I'm glad, he read it himself.

There is nothing more to say about Dr. Carl Hart. He is extremely knowledgeable in his field. I can also personally attest to much said about his European experience as I have been living in Germany for almost 5 years. February 2nd would be five. USA and racism "sad." A most have book.

Educational

Imho an outstanding scientist who dares to speak unpopular opinions. A rare combination. Respect, Sir!

Great book with an amazing changing in perspective. Especially on a topic like drugs. I love the science besides evidence and the anecdotal reports. Overall a real eye opener.

Wer umzingelt ist von Menschen die auf einen herabblicken nur weil man mal an einem Joint gezogen hat, der kann sie von diesem Buch ein paar tolle Diskussionspunkte rauspicken.

Absolute Empfehlung für jeden Drug-User

Dr. Hart is a hero and i enjoyed every second of this book. Humanity would take a huge step forward if more people were so educated and brave.

Must read for humanity
