This Penguin Classic is narrated by Mark Gatiss, who also wrote the screen play for the critically acclaimed BBC adaptation. Gatiss has also had an extensive acting career including roles in Sherlock, which he wrote alongside Steven Moffat, The League of Gentlemen and Wolf Hall.

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes a series of horrific discoveries about his client. Soon afterwards, various bizarre incidents unfold in England: an apparently unmanned shipis wrecked off the coast of Whitby; a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the 'Master' and his imminent arrival. In Dracula, Bram Stoker created one of the great masterpieces of the horror genre, brilliantly evoking a nightmare world of vampires and vampire hunters and also illuminating the dark corners of Victorian sexuality and desire.

Mark Gatiss‘ unparalleled performance of this complex and eerie classic captured me from beginning to the very end and never ceased to amaze me. Gatiss' mastery of tone, pacing, and delivery truly elevated the experience, making it a haunting journey that lingered in my mind long after the final chapter concluded.

What a pleasure to finally have listened to this cult-classic.

Implicitly assuming this masterpiece was overrated due to its oversaturation in modern-day culture (i.e. through cheesy Halloween costumes and the plethora of film depictions), I really understand now how I was missing out on a joyride for the senses. The brilliance and depth behind the writing was also so apparent, giving a glimpse into the Zeitgeist of the late 19th century.

Better late than never! And I'm sure I will re-listen at some point, because it is truly THAT good.

I just love Mark Gatiss' narration of one of my favourite classics. A great listen!

Gut gegen Böse. Liebe gegen Hass. Wissenschaft, Religion, Moral und Mystik. Freundschaft und Loyalität. Das personifizierte Böse, heldenhafte, selbstlose Männer und eine kluge, tatkräftige, empathische Frau - "Dracula" hat alles!

Man wird es kaum glauben, aber der Grusel-Klassiker schlechthin ist tatsächlich nicht nur ein Roman, der Angst macht, sondern ein psychologisch interessantes Werk mit Herz und Seele.

Bram Stokers Sprache ist schaurig schön und atmosphärisch dicht.

Das absolute Highlight ist Mark Gatiss' Lesung. Mühelos schlüpft er in alle Rollen, ohne dabei auch nur ein einziges Mal unecht zu wirken. Für dieses Buch gibt es sicher keinen besseren Sprecher.
