Eel Marsh house stands alone, surveying the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Mrs Alice Drablow lived here as a recluse. Now Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor with a London firm, is summoned to attend her funeral, unaware of the tragic and terrible secrets which lie behind the house's shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a young woman at the funeral with a wasted face, dressed all in black, that a sense of profound unease begins to creep over him, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk about the woman in black or what happens whenever she is seen.

Kipps has to stay on in the lonely house, sorting out Mrs. Drablow's papers. The mist begins to enshroud it and the surrounding graveyard and the high tide cuts it off from the outside world....

This is an excellent audio production of one of my favourite ghost stories. The narrator did such a great job conveying dread. I was positively spooked!

After Tony Walker’s mind blowing performance this reading sounds a bit weaker, but all in all the actor did a fine job.
The music in the end is absolutely unsuitable, it has ruined the last moments of the story for me.

The Woman in Black ist eine klassische Gruselgeschichte und gehört tatsächlich zu den besseren ihrer Art. Der Spannungsbogen wird langsam und stetig angehoben, Geheimnisse nach und nach aufgedeckt und der Horror, den der Protagonist durchlebt ist deutlich spürbar. Der Schreibstil ist blumig, aber gut verständlich. Eine absolute Empfehlung für Fans von klassischen Gruselgeschichten. Das Hörbuch ist eine klasse für sich. Der Erzähler gibt den einzelnen Figuren unverwechselbare Stimmen. Die atmosphärische Musik und die an richtiger Stelle platzierten Soundeffekte tragen wunderbar zur gruseligen Stimmung bei.
