In this stunning new fantasy novel from international bestselling author C. S. Pacat, heroes and villains of a long-forgotten war are reborn and begin to draw new battle lines. This epic fantasy with high-stakes romance will sit perfectly on shelves next to beloved fantasy novels like the Infernal Devices series, the Shadow and Bone trilogy, and the Red Queen series.

Sixteen-year-old dock boy Will is on the run, pursued by the men who killed his mother. Then an old servant tells him of his destiny to fight beside the Stewards, who have sworn to protect humanity if the Dark King ever returns. Will is thrust into a world of magic, where he starts training for a vital role in the oncoming battle against the Dark.

As London is threatened and old enmities are awakened, Will must stand with the last heroes of the Light to prevent the fate that destroyed their world from returning to destroy his own.

Like V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic and Shelby Mahurin’s Serpent & Dove, Dark Rise is more than just high intrigue fantasy—it’s fast-paced, action-packed, and completely surprising. Readers will love exploring the rich setting of nineteenth-century London. This thrilling story of friendship, deception, loyalty, and betrayal is sure to find a passionate audience of readers.

Honest fantasy. There won’t be any thing new that you haven’t heard or read before. However this book takes all the lore that is loved by fans of this genre and uses it to paint an immersive and appreciative narrative. Characters are good.

When does book two arrive!!!

I'd been on the lookout for new works from C.S. Pacat after reading and rereading and rereading the Captive Prince trilogy, but somehow this slipped by me until now. But once i saw the author I couldn't not. It took a little for me to get into because the characters started out a little more Y.A. than is typically my taste (though not a deal breaker by far) and mostly it was the reading which was too slow for me for the first half of the book. But the speaker - who does the characters very well and modulates beautifully btw, no complaints here - has actually become much more fluid in the second half and the second book, which makes it much easier to stay engaged and an enjoyable listen. As for the novel itself, there is A LOT of exposition and worldbuilding to get through, so it feels a little slower at the beginning though the stakes are quite high from the very start and the action is engaging when it happens. Your typical trilogy starter (affectionately), except it's C.S. Pacat so prepare for curveballs. I knew the narrator would be unreliable and non-linear, the allegiances would be murky, the morals would be grey and the twists would be coming. And while i had my suspicion about the big one pretty early on, that took nothing away from enjoying the journey to get there and the satisfaction at having it confirmed (not everything has to be an absolute surprise to be a great twist, a good foreshadowing is worth its weight in gold. And there's enough narrative rope left to hang quite a few darlings along the way i suspect so i was very much tuned to see the story go on. If you don't mind a bit of a lead in and nerdily enjoy exploring a new fantasy world with our fresh young, queer protagonists, this is definitely the series for you. And if nothing else it's well worth the stepping stone to the trilogy as it goes on. C.S. Pacat delivers masterfully.

I think I'm a little bit in love. Will and James have me in their spell so much .... I could probably read a package insert with them and love it. :'D

I think the story's basic idea is great, even if I was strongly reminded of Narnia and King Arthur in between. But then some things went too fast for me, just seemed thrown in and I as a reader sat in front of the book and was like "Huh?". It was almost as if unfinished scenes had been jumbled together, leaving me confused - it just went too quickly. (Some things were just explained in great detail and then it's just extremely noticeable when other things that are actually important are run through so quickly).
The writing style didn't quite convince me either, it was often too abrupt and had too many repetitions of words ... but the characters? The characters? Hah, I love just about all of them! (Sorry Katherine ... you're not one of them, unfortunately)

I'm so looking forward to book two because the ending of the first one was just .... " Throwing the book across the flat" .... FOR F*CKS SAKE! That was so good and so intense and just grandiose.

I'm so in love!

This story is pulling you into a world of contrasts, where the lines between light and dark, good and evil are blurred. And even though there are many elements in this dark fairy tale that are not new to the genre and that are reminiscent of Tolkien, it is at the same time suprisingly like nothing I've ever read before. It has a beautifully crafted and highly faceted storyline that will keep you guessing until the end.

Rich and dark
