Like every other book by Ali Hazelwood I absolutely adore this book. The characters are great and the love story is very sweet

Such a sweet YA romance
Loved the characters a lot, even though Mel was scratching the "annoying main character" surface from time to time. Also loved the way the book ended, very well rounded this was such a refreshing "read"

Really enjoyed this book! Excellent performance by narrator.
First and foremost: the narrator was amazing! Nolan’s voice was on point!
I also loved the story. I’m a fan of the author and have read all her previous women in STEM books and I liked how she introduced a new “nerdy” world with this book to us. I definitely think that this one is one of her best stories. The plot was simple but nicely written, enough drama and enough romance to balance everything out without feeling overdone. The characters were developed nicely and the plot moved in a satisfying pace. It’s one of the books I wish I could forget and re-listen all over again.

Very enjoyable
This was a really enjoyable story and kept bringing my mind back to the hit series Queens Gambit.

More entertaining than expected
I recently started playing chess and was looking for books that have chess as topic. I was thrilled to find this one as it almost checks all my boxes. Almost? Yes, the only drawback was the first person narrator. I hate reading books in first person because inevitably the protagonist will get to the point where the inner monologue is simply annoying. As reader you can’t help thinking „Girl stop this inner self chastising and please move the story along.“ All that whining really gets repetitive. But that’s a problem I come across in most first person narrated books. I simply don’t care about drawn out, whiny, selfdestructing inner monologues, I want to know how the story continues.
Despite that it was an entertaining read and I don’t regret picking it up.

For teenagers
I love Hazlewood‘s books and I was excited to start this one but was a bit disappointed. The girl is 18, much younger than the main characters in the novels before. Feels like it’s a PG-13 version of Hazlewood‘s usual writing.
