A Black Notice means one thing: unidentified human remains. This time, five skeletons buried deep in the fenland soil.

Rowan Jackman and Marie Evans are the detectives who take on the toughest cases on the Lincolnshire fens. This time trouble comes in threes.

6 a.m. on a dark autumn morning. Retired detective Bob Ruston is about to feed the dog when the doorbell rings. The man on the doorstep has blood running down his cheek and a look of terror on his face. 'Please! Let me in! They're going to kill me!'

Bob sees a handcuff dangling from the man's lacerated wrist.

Later that day, a stylishly dressed woman marches into Saltern-le-Fen police station demanding to see Detective Marie Evans. 'I want you to find my husband.'

Then a homeowner clearing undergrowth in his back garden makes a horrifying discovery. The decomposing remains of five bodies huddled in an old World War 2 pillbox.

Detective Jackman asks Interpol to issue a Black Notice. But little is he prepared for the shocking results that come in . . .

I just love Joy Ellis’s books and was more than happy to see that there was a new one of her Jackman & Evans series.

Foremost: Richard Armitage is again doing a tremendous job! When I started the audiobook I gave a little sigh and was instantly drawn into the story, he is really such a great narrator!

The story was one of the best of this series, different storylines and also different characters that brought the story to life.
You are being kept guessing almost until the end and it was really good how the loose ends were tied together.

Absolute must and I am looking forward to the next!

Richard Armitage ist wie immer großartig, die verschiedenen Akzente für verschiedene Rollen, sein Timing... das hilft über viele Klischees in der Story hinweg.

Again Joy Ellis did an extraordinary good job. Not only was the case - or better - the multiple cases interesting and gripping till the end, but her way of describing the psychological subtleties of the perpetrators and our beloved team around DI Jackman was magnificent. I really hope there's another one coming!

I love this series, in fact I love Joy Ellis books. “Black Notice” is without doubt a very good book, but to my mind not as gripping and tense as some of her other books. I thought that it was bit slow. The end is good and quite surprising, but it took a long time to get there.

4.5 stars - good, but slow
