I did enjoy the audiobook on the whole, but the last three hours just seemed to drag on endlessly. There’s suspense and then there’s unnecessary dragging out the plot for the hell of it. Also, I was desperately waiting for some redeeming qualities for the choices that the protagonists made, both past and present, but then the ending came which left me furious. So much wasted life on all fronts!
Will definitely check out his other book though.

Great new book, voller Spannung und sehr geschickt konstruiert. Die Ereignisse in Barton Mallett um 1993 werden 30 Jahre später im Film "the cut" gespiegelt.
Der hochdekorierte Architekt Ben Knot kehrt in den Ort seiner Kindheit zurück. Er ist jetzt selber Vater von zwei Kindern: Nate, der als Filmstar entdeckt wird, sowie Lily, die Sportliche. Zur Familie gehört auch Bens Freundin Dani, in allen social media daheim, 15 Jahre jünger als Ben und Managerin von Nates Filmkarriere.
In Bens Jugend werden Mark Cherry und sein Cello wiederholt von der "Fünferbande" in Barton Mallett angegriffen und verprügelt. Die Gewalt eskaliert, als ein Mädchen ermordet wird und Dave mit den grünen Augen und schwarzen Haare dafür lange Jahre ins Gefängnis muss.
Inhaltlich hat Richard Armitage noch weiter ausgeholt: Max und Brandon haben sich zwar getrennt, ihr Sohn Charlie wird aber weiterhin liebevoll betreut. Interessanterweise soll auch auf Wunsch des Filmproduzenten "the cut" im Videoformat gedreht werden und zwar mit einer alten Kamera von 1993. Weiter geht es auch um ein Spiel mit Identitäten in den sozialen Medien, so entpuppt sich Nates Chatpartnerin Freckles überraschenderweise als älterer Mann. Für mich war auch die klassische Musik mit Cello und Klarinette bei zwei Jugendlichen beeindruckend.
Der gut aussehende Priester des Ortes ähnelt im Alter Gandalf und auch die erwähnten Filme machen diesen Roman extrem unterhaltsam. (z. B. back to the future, dune, Lord of the rings und natürlich: the hobbit) Der Hobbit wird nicht kommentiert, aber wer weiß eigentlich nicht, wer dort bei den Zwergen erfolgreich die Hauptrolle gespielt hat.
Als Autor ist Richard Armitage auch in seinem zweiten Buch wirklich gut, eindrückliche und poetische Beschreibungen von Natur und Landschaft machen diesen Roman bildhaft. Außerdem gibt es nicht nur mit dem Cello biographische Bezüge. Dass der Verfasser Spannung geschickt erzeugt und seine Figuren mit Leben erfüllt sind, wäre noch anzufügen.
Als äußerst erfahrener Sprecher deckt der Autor hier wieder eine weite Bandbreite von Personen und Akzenten ab, man könnte ihm noch viel länger als 10 Stunden zuhören! Kaum zu glauben, dass ihm bei Dani noch eine neue Ausdrucksweise einfällt, passt zu der Figur ausgezeichnet.
Jacob Dudman ist tatsächlich ebenbürtig (very good choice), er trifft die Personen mit Verständlichkeit, Lesegeschwindigkeit sehr gut und kann auch die Frauenstimmen überzeugend sprechen.
Insgesamt ist dieser Thriller inhaltlich und von den Sprechern her gesehen ein ganz großer Wurf!
