London.

Detective Sergeant James Henderson's remarkable gut instincts have put him on a three-year fast track to becoming an inspector. But the advancement of his career has come at a cost. Gay, posh and eager to prove himself in the Metropolitan Police, James has allowed himself few chances for romance.

But when the murder of barrister Maria Curzon-Whyte lands in his lap, all that changes. His investigation leads him to a circle of irresistibly charming men. And though he knows better, James finds himself enticed into their company.

Soon his desire for photographer Ben Morgan challenges him to find a way into the other man's lifestyle of one-night stands and carefree promiscuity. At the same time his single murder case multiplies into a cruel pattern of violence and depravity.

But as the bodies pile up and shocking secrets come to light, James finds both his tumultuous private life and coveted career threatened by a bitter legacy.

Contains mature themes.

I rarely write a review but this audiobook kept me enthraled and I couldn't stop listening. The story is well written, well narrated and I can't wait to listen to the next part.

Brilliant

I'll admit it - crime novels aren't usually my go-to reads. But every so often, I crave a good whodunit, and "Bitter Legacy" by Bel Maclean hit the spot. I opted for the audiobook version, and the talented narrator drew me in from the start. I was hooked, tossing around theories and predictions as the story unfolded. While I managed to guess a few twists correctly, the ending still blew me away - it was expertly tied to the rest of the narrative, leaving me impressed.

What worked particularly well for me was the book's pacing, which alternated seamlessly between personal and police work. This structure kept me engaged, and I appreciated how the author wove together the sergeant detective's personal growth with the case's progression.

While Book hasn't converted me into a die-hard crime fiction fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. If you're in the mood for a gripping, well-crafted mystery, this one's definitely worth a listen (or read). Bel Maclean's writing is engaging, and I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a compelling, suspenseful gay tale.

The character development.

This is a really well-written story that I can only recommend. The characters are definitely not one-dimensional and the story got me really invested. What an emotional rollercoaster. The characters touched me… and they will stay with me for a while.

So good!

Spoilers ahead!

i actually liked the charakters for most of the story. it was refreashing to not read another lovestory where only dumb misunderstandings are standing in the way of true love, instead we get a very honest look at a lot of the problems of the gay dating and hook up scene. A lot of the bullshit Ben is proclaiming a a defense of his behavior I have actually heard in real life from men who honestly believe they're just 'sex positive'. Obviously the whole relationship between Jamie and Ben is extremely toxic but it is also portraied that way, for most of the story.
However the ending, wtf!? To make the sexually abused orphan the murderer instead of the highly manipulative, narcissistic and selfish dushbag, was a real mistake.
I loved Staggy, he deserved better than this shitty ending just so the story could have another dumb twist. Ben and Jamie are a horrible couple, they shouldn't EVER be together and they should certainly not end up with each other - basically the story is punishing someone for having a shitty childhood and rewards toxic behavior.

Well written but really problematic message
