He’s a backup goalie with a broken game. The only thing he needs more than a win is the hot, grumpy bartender who pours his weekly beer.
Becker James is having a spectacularly bad season. Once a top draft pick, he’s now riding the bench in the minors, one failed save away from being cut. The highlight of his week? A lonely hour on a barstool at Sports Balls, Denver’s queerest watering hole—and Forest, the bartender with flannel sleeves, a gruff voice, and a beard that stars in Beck’s dreams.
Opportunity strikes when Forest’s LGBTQ hockey team—the Stickhandlers—loses their goalie last-minute. Beck makes Forest an offer: he’ll help them beat the most hated team in the beer league, but he wants something in return—one night together.
Cue the record scratch, because Seth Forrester doesn’t do hookups. After his last one went horribly wrong, he swore off men for good. He’s definitely not falling for the awkward hottie who just stammered through an indecent proposal.
But Beck is prepared to press his case, no matter how awkward it gets. And one beer league game turns into something messier, sweeter, and so much harder to walk away from…

There’s just something about Sarina Bowen’s books that feels like being tucked in under a soft, cozy blanket. I expected more of that comforting vibe—but WOW. This one didn’t just meet expectations… it completely topped all the previous books.
📖 I loved this book so much. This is exactly why I read romance. This story delivered on every single level, and it’s easily one of the most wholesome MM romances I’ve ever read. And honestly? Becker James is a huge reason why. I knew by about 20% in that this was going to be a 5⭐ read for me.
🎧First the narration…
Once again, my all-time favorite Teddy Hamilton absolutely nailed Beck. He captured that golden retriever energy, the vulnerability, the humor—everything. I loved his performance so much.
Brandon Francis as Forest was also excellent. His tone and delivery for Forest fit perfectly. My only small note is that his interpretation of Beck’s voice didn’t fully work for me—it felt slightly choppy or a bit off at times. But his main performance as Forest? Spot on.
This is 100% going to be a comfort relisten/reread for me.
Beck absolutely stole my heart. A 25-year-old goalie who is sweet, genuine, wonderfully weird—and the way his brain works? The things that come out of his mouth had me genuinely laughing out loud. I think he might be one of my all-time favourite Sarina Bowen characters. He is completely himself—unapologetically honest in a way that’s not awkward, but incredibly endearing. Thoughtful, intelligent, kind… and so open in a way that feels rare. His unfiltered way of speaking was just adorable. But beneath that, there’s also insecurity—him believing he’s too weird, not enough, and the reason he has no real support system. That part genuinely broke my heart.
Watching him slowly realize that he is worthy of love? That he deserves good things?
Absolutely beautiful. His inner monologue? Pure gold.
And that chaotic “goalies are a different breed” energy? He embodies it perfectly.
Total golden retriever vibes—and I loved every second of it.
Then there’s Forest—the complete opposite. A 33-year-old grumpy, burly, “lumbersnack” single dad, bar owner/ bartender. He’s dealing with past trauma, trust issues, and financial struggles, and has basically sworn off relationships. He’s grounded, kind-hearted, but convinced someone like Beck could never truly want him because of all his baggage. But Beck—being the gem that he is—just quietly and persistently finds his way into Forest’s life.
I’ll be honest—up until about 70%, Forest did frustrate me a bit with the ghosting and emotional avoidance. But once he finally admits to himself how important Beck is? He’s all in—and it was so worth the wait.
What also made this book stand out from the others in the series:
Less heavy hockey focus (which I personally loved)
No overwhelming “closeted” trope dominating the story
Beck’s virginity handled naturally and without overdramatization
A stronger focus on relationship development and emotional growth
That being said—the final hockey game scene? SO well written. I genuinely felt like I was sitting there watching it live. It had me on edge and even a little emotional.
I also loved the beer league hockey scenes, Beck’s hilarious running commentary, and the sweetness between Forest and his son Charlie. 🥹 This book isn’t heavy on drama, but it still made me feel everything. One moment I was smiling like an idiot, the next I had to pause because something hit me right in the chest.
🔥The spice? Perfectly balanced. Not too much, not too little—just right for their story.
