One cold December day, two men are blindsided by a hockey trade; one is the most decorated goalie in the league, while the other one is the youngest coach in the majors.

Jethro Hale is the last player Coach Clay Powers wants to see on his roster, but the G.M. pulls a fast one. And it's not like he can even explain why. Nobody knows about their love affair fifteen years ago.

Cue the all-star awkwardness, the painful memories and the reawakening of deep feelings on both sides.

Unfortunately, their attraction still burns brightly. But it can never be. A player and a coach? The scandal would overshadow the team’s banner year.

If only they could resist each other…

If you love grumpy heroes, high stakes hockey, struggling single parents and smoldering kisses, grab your copy of The Last Guy on Earth.

After absolutely loving the first two books in the series, I couldn’t wait to dive into The Last Guy on Earth. There’s just something incredibly cozy and comforting about Sarina Bowen’s books—they wrap around you like a soft blanket and make you feel right at home.

Going in, I expected the same feeling as with the first two books, but this one was a bit different. While still very good, it had a noticeably heavier tone.

This is a second-chance, slow-burn romance centered around Coach Clay Powers. Introduced in the previous books, Clay is a 39-year-old former hockey player who became the youngest coach in the hockey world. He’s fully dedicated to turning his team into one of the best in the country—so much so that he completely neglects his own needs. The only person who knows Clay is a queer man in the world of professional hockey is Hudson Newgate.

Clay is still carrying the scars of a broken heart from fifteen years ago—his bittersweet romance with the only man he ever truly loved, Jethro Hale. That relationship left him deeply disappointed and painfully alone.

Jethro, now a 37-year-old grumpy goalie dealing with his own family drama, is still closeted and ends up being drafted to Clay’s team. Neither of them is particularly happy about this reunion. Being forced back into each other’s orbit means reliving memories from their early twenties, when their relationship ultimately fell apart. In my opinion, it was largely due to miscommunication, misunderstandings, and fear—especially within the deeply homophobic hockey culture of that time.

The flashbacks to their younger relationship were beautiful yet heartbreaking, making the emotional impact of their separation even stronger.

Both Clay and Jethro are layered, relatable, and genuinely lovely characters. They’re both the type of people who take care of everyone else before themselves. Even after fifteen years, it feels like the timing still isn’t quite right for them, which makes their eventual HEA feel truly hard-earned. Watching them slowly work through their emotions and find a way back to each other was rewarding and emotional.

As much as I enjoyed the book, I didn’t quite love it as much as the first two—and the reason is simple. Because both characters are deeply embedded in the hockey world, the story leaned very heavily into hockey. There was quite a lot of shop talk, team strategy, and detailed game descriptions. For my personal taste, that pushed the romance slightly into the background at times.

The spice was nicely done—present but not overwhelming, fitting the slower emotional buildup between them.

And the narration? Once again, absolutely outstanding.
If you know me, you already know how much I adore Teddy Hamilton, and paired with J. F. Harding, it’s always a winning combination. Their performances brought all the vulnerability, pain, and lingering love between these two characters beautifully to life. They never fail to amaze me.

Loved it. Enjoyed it. A heartfelt second-chance story that balances nostalgia, healing, and hard-earned love.

Bittersweet Second Chance Wrapped in Hockey

The two heroes here are a charming couple … and following their reunion after 15 years apart is sweet. Pity the child and the sister don’t play more central roles, would have been more original (I guess) than standard sex scenes and endless descriptions of hockey games. But in the end, the balance of elements works well, though it’s all a bit „routine“. But hey … what do you expect from a MM Romance hockey novel? (I liked this one.)
