Tolstoy makes you wait. The first half crawls, Ivan’s life, his career, his illness setting in, and just when you think nothing is really happening, you realise that’s entirely the point. You’re feeling exactly what Ivan is feeling.

The last two chapters are where it all comes together, and if you’re not paying attention you’ll miss it. The moment Ivan stops resisting and the fear just dissolves, devastating, but quietly so. No drama, no grand speeches. Just a few pages that carry the entire book.

The audiobook narrator was solid, especially towards the end when it counts most. Minor caveat: sounds like he recorded it with a mouth full, so there’s an adjustment period.

Give it the attention it deserves in those final chapters
