For just a moment, things seem to be under control for the soldier known as Breq. Then a search of Atheok Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist - someone who might be an ancillary from a ship that's been hiding beyond the empire's reach for three thousand years.
In the meantime, a messenger from the alien and mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai - ruler of an empire that's at war with itself.
Anaander is heavily armed and extremely unhappy with Breq. She could take her ship and crew and flee, but that would leave everyone at Athoek in terrible danger. Breq has a desperate plan. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.

Fading Glory of a boring story
The whole plot leans heavily on what has happened in the last parts , to such an extent that this story should rather be part of the second novel than one on its own- but that's just the way it is nowadays: every successful novel needs to be rolled out endlessly in sequels and prequels until the original idea is overstreched and the readers turn to something else (or the auther dies).
Contrary to first novel nothing new is added or happens and so no wonder that it is rather boring to follow the grievances of AIs in human bodies that want to be hugged, but can't or should,band who else whats to be hugged, wants his/her feelings recognized, needs to be reprimanded or discovers the she/he has a mind of its own. Of course this needs a lot of talking.
Meanwhile the meaner one of the two (or three?) tyrants is trying to attack- I say trying because the tyrant obviously hasn't asked anyone how she-he feels about attacking, and the author goes lengths to make a point that even AIs are persons in their own rights and can decide over their own future. And this fact needs again allot of talking and the evil tyrant is merely defeated by not giving him/her a say- and I dare say that that was the whole battle plan: lure her-him into the star system, tell the tyrant to shut up and make him-her realize that no one wants to listen to her-him ;).
It's like: "hey we are in the middle of a discussion about our conciousness, don't you see? How dare you coming here and giving orders to us, when we haven't yet elaborated what everyone of us actually wants? Besides, we think we are an autonomous collective right now, though we haven't figured out who's in on who's not..."

Hervorragend
Ich hatten ein wenig sorgen wegen dem Ende der Buchreihe.
Völlig unbegründet stellt sich heraus. Ein gutes Ende einer bemerkenswert einzigartigen Reihe. Ich hatte sehr viel Spaß beim hören!
