Perfect combination of a great book and an outstanding narrator

Ana K. Wrenn's debut novel has it all and so does this audiobook. A psychological suspense thriller with a very strong, difficult & complex main character.
From the beginning, I was drawn into this story and into the dark, isolated and oppressive world of Professor Dr. Sonja J. Storey. With Sonja J. Storey, the author gives us a complex character with many rough edges, which wasn't easy for me to like. Cold, hostile, suspicious, self-centered but at the same time strong with a great will to survive. Little by little, we learn more about her life and history as well as the background of what had shaped her. At the same time, the story gathers momentum, triggered by various events (threatening notes, emails, and more), making this an engaging and complex experience. The misery and pain of the main protagonist were nearly palpable for me.

The story itself and its course was unpredictable, which made it even more exciting.
With Junior Professor Crystal Byrd, the story gets a second very strong and likable female character with a life story that was also touching. Despite a not exactly defined age difference, which is often mentioned, two women meet here on an equal footing.
The meeting of these two women and the associated development of the story and characters are my personal highlights.
Abby Craden does an outstanding job here, especially with the two main characters. I've listened to many audiobooks narrated by Abby Craden, but this is my favorite so far. What gives me lasting food for thought is the toxic work environment described here that the women in this story have been exposed to in different ways. Because that's just very realistic. Despite everything, we don't see any victims here but strong women who have been shaped by life and have continued. With the character development of Sonja J. Storey, the author remains true to her character, which I find very authentic. The resolution of the story was also exciting for me and gave credit to the topic that stands above this book, "The Chaos Theory".
There is nothing off-the-shelf here, just "designer quality", which fortunately doesn't cost a fortune. (little inside joke).
For me an outstanding listening experience which I will certainly listen to a few more times. And despite her gruff, unfriendly manner, Professor Sonja J. Storey quickly grew on me.
