Young Earnest befriends another little boy on his family’s weekly trips to church. But is he an imaginary friend conjured to amuse during long sermons, or is the little stone cherub something more? 'The Marble Child' is taken from the second volume of the Victorian Anthologies Horror series, featuring short stories by classic writers of the spooky, the scary and the supernatural. Guaranteed to give you the shivers, each collection includes familiar and loved creepy tales as well as those less well-known. With music by Benedict Edwards.

John makes up his mind to marry May Forster, the prettiest young woman in the village. After John asks her to marry him several times, May finally agrees. John says that his love for May is so great that he would come back from the dead if that was what she wanted him to do. Two days before his wedding, John leaves to visit his seriously ill godfather. May begs him not to go because she has a feeling that something bad will happen. John reassures her that nothing will prevent him from arriving at his wedding on time.

The problem with the dark is you don’t really know what’s lurking in there. Something hiding? Something menacing? Or just an inky dome for the stars to twinkle on? Writers rarely let us dwell on the latter. No, they would much rather they put our nerves on edge, that our skin would begin to crawl and that the cold sweat of fear propels our pulse and heartbeat to nightmare-inducing trauma. I think they’re ready.

For much of history women have been seen rather than heard. Their thoughts, their views, have lain too long in the shadows of our culture. Whilst this traditional view has some merit it is not entirely accurate. Here, gathered together in these volumes, we can, through their words, experience their lives; we can hear their voices, their thoughts, joys, loves and losses. For the female poet there was always the confining hand of men to instruct that their time was perhaps spent more productively elsewhere.

We are captivated by colour. It seeps into our emotions, our vistas. It’s part of everyday life. Sometimes its part of something much darker. Our eminent authors in this volume bring you colours of every shade. From the terror of HP Lovecraft and the shadowed world of Edith Nesbit to the wordplay of Virginia Woolf - as well as many others. Color in all its light and shades, hues and tints is brought to the fore by these exceptional writers.

We sit. We lie. We wait. We are examined. We are left alone. Emotions fritter. The door reopens. The face. Is it tinged with sadness or reassuring and open? The words. Are they easy to comprehend? Is it good news or bad? We can answer that. It’s bad. Undeniably bad. None of our authors have good news for you. The diagnosis? You already know that. Death.

Women, so often referred to as the gentler sex - in this volume at least, this is an unfounded and unlikely description. From their minds and pens comes a series of macabre, twisted tales that are anything but gentle. But as they weave their magic, usually black, and mesh you into their narrative you just know 'sugar and spice and all things nice' are not likely to be what little girls really are made of and certainly not these femme fatales....

The third installment of Edith Nesbit's Psammead Trilogy continues to follow the lives of the original five children and their magical endeavors. The children once again encounter the Psammead, but this time they also discover an ancient amulet that contains time-traveling powers and fuels their adventure throughout the novel. As the children experience different civilizations through time, they meet a multitude of new characters and explore many notable locales such as Atlantis before the flood, Babylon, and the Tin Islands.

Continuing the magical adventures of siblings Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother, the sequel to Edith Nesbit's Five Children and It opens with the hatching of a phoenix in the children's very own home. The phoenix, whose egg was contained in a magical carpet, tells the children that the carpet may grant them three wishes a day. As the bird accompanies the children on many adventures - sometimes enlisting the help of the Psammead - the children begin to wear out the magic carpet as well as the phoenix, bringing their time to an end.

The Book of Dragons consists of eight fantastical stories of dragons and people who get to meet and interact with them. The dragons are of all kinds, colors, temperaments, and ages. The stories are full of adventures and action. The book was published originally in The Strand Magazine in 1899 as a seven-part series, with an additional story added after the author’s death.

When five children discover the Psammead - a malevolent sand-fairy - who says he can grant wishes, the children cannot believe their luck! All their wildest secret dreams will come true: beauty beyond compare, riches greater than kings, the ability to fly. But wishes are not always what they seem, and every wish the fairy grants goes wrong for the children.

A young man’s inheritance includes more than a house when an ebony-framed painting of a beautiful woman starts to exert a strange hold over its new owner. Could this lead to his tragic demise?

Here is a library where the shelves are never quite still, and the books, if treated kindly, will open of their own accord. In The Edith Nesbit Library, her beloved stories are read aloud in full: tales of brave children, troublesome wishes, enchanted castles, railway adventures, dragons, phoenixes, and other impossible things that have a habit of becoming true before tea-time. Step inside, sit very quietly, and listen.

Almost always when we think of Ghost Stories, we first think of those written by the Victorians. Whatever the reasons given or proffered the reality and known facts are that if you want a really good ghost story to bring that edge of chill, that foreboding of dread, that feeling that in an empty house we are not quite alone and that sometimes the sharp, sheer shock of what just happened is upon us then look no further than ‘The Victorian Ghost Story’ for your listening pleasure.

In this volume of fifty poems our classic poets delve with storied verse into every facet of this institution. From the good, the bad and even the ugly, from the Wedding day to the realisation that divorce and separation maybe the better path. Between these two frontiers other avenues and facets are explored by the pens of many including Shakespeare, Khalil Gibran, Emily Dickinson and the Rossetti’s.

Four short children's stories regarding a family's barnyard cows and their comical adventures. - Summary by Alicia S
